dashboard/expose [request] Thread last updated on 2005-11-28 23:16:54

I haven't really seen anything like this in a theme yet. Not so much as a widget engine, but a layered vwm for aim, winamp, etc. Would this be possible with a vwm plugin or should this be a module request thread?

huh?

something to replicate the expose feature on mac/konfabulator, aside from clicking on a vwm box.

whats "the expose feature"?

LS can't do it. If you're on XP, there are some free apps that try, but I've only found two, and both were buggy (haven't looked for any in a few months). Blizzle had the links to both I tried.

the expose feature is a transparent, layered window overtop of your desktop that holds widgets and stuff.

you mean like Samurize and Kapsules?

Posted by member 5835 on 2005-11-25 04:32:34 link

yea as far as widgets are concerned. i was saying without widgets though -- just the effect. consider this a module request thread.

still don't understand what it is you are trying to do.

Me neither. But then again I stopped paying attention after the first mention of widgets.

try with smallwindows.sf.net
i tried to do it using skinbox and rabidvwm, but had too many problems.

the first mention of widgets was in the form of "not so much widgets..", so whatever. i know this whole concept is difficult to grasp. sike.

thanks sryo.

not really what was i was looking for, but a cool concept. still too buggy to use though.

West and I have been around for a loong while. If we can't grasp what you are asking for then most people won't. So if you want something done or offered you need to explain it better.

i can appreciate your seniority devilboi, but if my second post wasn't enough description then you probably didn't have the right info to help me out anyways. also, i thought knowledge of mac's eyecandy features were fairly widespread. next time i'll be more descriptive.

Not with the people I know. ;) Never touched a Mac, myself.

Last time I saw a mac it was for work and we were supporting MacOS 8.5. As for your second description being descriptive enough for help... Well...if it isn't about widgets that leaves us "stuff". So uhmm...yeah...LS can do "stuff".

Posted by member 1885 on 2005-11-27 04:11:24 link

I own a Mac actually -- a Rev C iMac (Strawberry) running Mac OS 8.6 :D

Aside from that I'm only familiar with the dock, and that particular "innovation" hasn't really made me very interested in newer Mac eyecandy features...

I think he's trying to make a layered vwm. So like hitting f9 for instance would show certain apps like his IM and amp and whatever else...then releasing or hitting f9 again would hide them...
Am I on the right track _neil?
That would be pretty tricky to do...maybe kidnap can work?
[edit]
Actually I guess it's not that tricky and kind of a neat idea, I'm doing an "upper layer" for my label widgets.

i can count the number of times ive used osx on one hand. cool i didnt describe a mac feature to a Tee for some forumgoers. ill check my words next time.

tesh: thats exactly what i was talking about. how would one do that?

Posted by member 3800 on 2005-11-28 04:58:14 link

Well I just created a label of width and height the size of the screen and set it to semi-transparent, then set a hotkey so f9 would toggle it (and some other labels). As for winamp and IM, you'll have to use kidnap, haven't tried it yet, but it should work.

worduup. thanks dude

Posted by member 1 on 2005-11-28 15:41:01 link

so lemmie get this straight...you are trying to recreate *VWMSticky with labels?

Posted by member 3800 on 2005-11-28 18:38:30 link

eh...sorta. Think of Konfabulator...you can set it up so that all the widgets are hidden and then when you hit f9 (I think) a layer is painted over the desktop and all the widgets are shown. I kinda like this idea because of the widgets I've done using labels. However it's not dependent on what desktop you're on with your vwm.

Posted by member 1 on 2005-11-28 23:16:54 link

well showing/hiding "widgets" would be easy really...thats just a toggle bang. But what made the request hard to understand was the windows. What I was talking about doing was instead of trying to get kidnap to bind a window to a label, you just switch to a specific VWM window.

btw...there are some big issues with using kidnap that you may want to look into before you start using it. Not that kidnap is a bad module...just can have unexpected results.
