Access Denied on all rc files Thread last updated on 2004-08-21 19:35:22

I just did a clean install of windows xp pro /w sp2 slipstreamed and after installing LiteStep whenever I try and edit any of my .rc files I get a nice friendly pop up saying, "Access Denied."

Ontop of that strange things with the Non|Step and standard 07_53 fonts...Random letters seem to be garbled with Non|Step, such as file manager dispalys as...Ale Manager. Winamp is offline looks like Winamp is ofaine. All buttons in the msstyle of Non|Step also are not smaller than usual but the font just looks, very wrong... Impossible to read.

I'm already regreting SP2, woo @ windows.

As you've done a clean install the "owner" of the rc files probably isn't you anymore. Well, it is you, just you from the previous install and therefore a different internal id. To fix this, in an explorer window go to Tools -> Folder Options -> View Tab -> Uncheck "Use simple file sharing" -> Click OK.
Then right click on your litestep folder and go to properties -> Security tab -> Advanced -> Owner tab -> Select your user account -> Tick "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects" -> Click OK -> Click OK.
Then if you want you can turn back on simple file sharing.
That should sort the access denied issue.

Not sure about the font issue other than make sure that you have installed the fonts from the $ThemeDir$misc/ folder.

I don't think that's it. I had the same issue. I installed XP with SP1 slipstreamed, then installed SP2. I installed LS, copied over my old personal.rc and hotkey.rc, and I got the "Access Denied" message. And I did take ownership of the files, but I get the same message.

I took ownership of my files, same thing. Also a fresh install of LiteStep with omars install does the same thing.

you guys might want to check out DEP. i was going to post it before, but wanted to wait to see how Whitman's fix worked. do a search on google on shutting off DEP and see how that helps as well. DEP (Data Execution Prevention) is a "feature" of SP2 that is supposed to stop some programs from harming your system but apparantly it's breaking many programs.

Doesn't DEP only work with the Athlon 64? I'll remove it from the boot.ini string anyway and see if it fixes anything.

I found a work around for access denied on the rc files though:
Select Open With and then pick notepad or whatever and select Always Open With This...

Seems to work, now I just need to figure out what module in Non|Step is causing load times to go past one minute with SP2.

Posted by member 178951 on 2004-08-18 23:48:38 link

ok, few things -

1. DEP is enabled in hardware if used with an AMD64 chip, but enabled in software if used with anything else.

2. i'm running windows2000 and i'm getting the access denied problem with my rc files as well now. if i go to open them, access denied, however if i right click and edit them, they open in notepad just fine, and i can save them fine as well.

rc files are associated with litestep for me, so it has to be a problem with litestep opening them (since they open and save fine with notepad). however, this never happened to me before.

to anyone having this problem - have you changed your theme recently? maybe that's it. i changed mine recently (now using TS-1 theme). problem is definitely not SP2 related.

Never had the problem with it in XP and XP /w SP1. Only happend for me as soon as I did a clean install of XP /w SP2. I've been using the same theme forever.

I've also noticed lssliderfoo1.8 seems to cause any theme to load/recycle incredably slow(about a whole minute or so) with SP2.

LOL Ankle - saw this on the msfn forums. considering that i have the problem on win2k i'm still doubtful it's SP2. while your problem may be bigger than .rc files, concerning them specifically, i'm fairly sure it's the litestep program association.

here's something backing up my suspicion:

.rc files for me have been associated with LS. and i get the access error. i changed the association to notepad and everything works fine.

maybe someone can shed more light on this?

disgraceful: question. the error we (or, at least I) are getting literally says "Access Denied". is this the same thing you're getting?

Posted by member 9617 on 2004-08-19 18:08:19 link

Disgraceful: Right clicking edit didn't work for me, forgot to mention this. Same old access denied. But yeah, setting notepad as the default program fixes it.

I'm most confused to my font issue though. FI or FL seems to become garbled only in LiteStep and Explorer. It's perfectly fine in Trillian. This happens with the TrueType version of Non|Step. The font itself doesn't seem to be corrupted as it works fine on here.

-edit-
Hrmm just noticed it's only doing it on lowercase instances of fi and fl. Uppercase seems to display perfectly fine... And it does affect trill too.

-edit2-
Just got the old postscript version off Muhkuh and it display s fine. Strange that the truetype worked before on my other installs and my friends install of sp2 seems unaffected. I guess it's time to make a new conversion from the old postscript one.

deuce - yep, access denied. same error.

ankle - i'm glad the notepad trick worked, however it doesnt change the fact that there is a problem. i'm just wondering exactly what to report for bugs. stupid me forgot to check exactly which program it was associated with before.... i'm going to try replacing all the LS files with the latest version once to see if it helps, maybe there was some corruption or something.

and if i read your post correctly, the font itself was screwed up?

Apparently something is wrong is the truetype conversion as the postscript works for me fine. Funny though that no one else has the problem with the truetype font...

well, i'm getting some other wierd access denied errors and not just on .rc files.

next question for anyone who has had this - what program are you using as a file explorer? i've recently upgraded from Powerdesk 5 to 6 and this is a possible reason as well.

Hi all,
My problem is on the same lines, but not only do I get the access denied but very time I reboot explorer comes back.
I just did a clean install and put on SP2, I have been using litestep for ages and have never had this problem before. I used Omars installer and recieved no errors. However on reboot I get the standard litestep wall paper but no litestep. If i then go into the litestep dir. and start the exe over the top of explorer and then end process on explorer, then I have litestep working but i would have to go through this crap on the next reboot AAAAHHHHHH. any ideas? (explorer must die)

And to disgracefuls question, my file manager is Opus.

Posted by member 42702 on 2004-08-21 13:22:50 link

Ok, I solved my own problem. I had yet to install my file manager (Opus 6). when I did the litestep install worked fine. but the .rc file probelm is still there (the note book fix works but it is a bummer with the evars.rc having just to use note pad.)

Posted by member 9617 on 2004-08-21 19:35:22 link

I'm using explorer as a file manager. Will switch to xplorer^2 though when ever they add sort in groups.
