yesterday i downloaded the ls installe 3.0....the simple theme worked just fine. I tried some themes..and one one didm't worked correctly. this means that i was sitting in front of an empty wallpaper...no icons, no bars no menus...
i'm using '98 se, at home...so i could restore the system by copying a new OS...because also the scanreg /restore trick didn't worked for me.
so my question is how I can prevent thing like that on windows 98 and 2000, that i'm using to work,? is it possible to block litestep during the windows start?
I don't know where it is in '98, but either the registry or one of the ini files (I'm thinking system.ini) has the shell path. Search for litestep.exe. When you find it, replace the entire path with just explorer.exe and it should be fine upon reboot.
In Win2k, its' much easier to modify and deal with (for one thing, despite what the installer thins, you can change the shell w/o restarting), as you can separate it by user (which will also help if you want to use Litestep at work for whatever reason...keep a main account w/ explorer :)).
Right above: important topics
Thanks!
i got the win 98 thing...and also the account with explorer sounds logical...but what does "or one thing, despite what the installer thins, you can change the shell w/o restarting" means?
after using the installer to set LiteStep as your shell, it tells you that you need to reboot. this is certainly true. rebooting after changing shell settings is the only reliable way for those settings to take effect, at least on NT-based platforms which are the norm now, and it's not goint to hurt on 9x. (In particular, it's essential to reboot in order to get explorer to behave properly as a filemanager under LS. i don't get a kickback everytime someone reboots Cerbie, it's stated as a requirement because it is. :P)
lukas, on any version of windows you can hit CTRL+ALT+F1 anytime LS is running (even if the screen looks blank) to access the recovery menu. From here you can run anything, e.g. SetShell to return to explorer, 'Switch to default theme' to ummm, switch to the default theme, etc. ;)
there is never any need to reinstall an OS if something goes wrong with LS. :|
which themes gave you problems lukas?
i suppose the ctrl+alt+f1
combo is exactly what i was looking for! Thanks a lot!
Now i will install it also on my workstation!
Anyway can't remember the theme! sorry
I'll admit it doesn't hurt, just somewhat annoying. Keeping the OS updated, the last thing I want is something else that requires a restart (ah, the NT4 days, when updates were sparse, and you didn't have restart for months...and couldn't use most brand-new non-server hardware for lack of drivers).
I switch back to explorer when gaming, and then back again after, and never had any troubles logging off and then back on (I'm glad regedit remembers where it last was!). On the other hand, I'm very careful about what I have installed and running...and most anything aside from Winzip and WinRAR that add options in explorer context menus ends up causing some kind of problem.
