lockups on launching the shell usually occur when a startup program depends on explorer, and locks the system waiting for Explorer to launch. Try booting without any shell, then manually launch litestep with the -nostartup param. (or just hold the shift key down when logging in. Grab Autoruns (from sysinternals.com) and determine which startup program is killing your system. Probably your virus scanner or other malware.
