Litesteps freezes after login Thread last updated on 2008-01-12 20:48:25

Yeah, I'm sorry for asking about this stuff, coming of as some ignorant noob that can't search the forum. But I've tried, with some help, but not all.

I used to have Litestep on my computer, and I figured I'd get it again. I used the Omar installer, and rebooted, was going to update, after I logged in, everything came to a halt, the mouse and keyboard unresponsive. Ctrl-alt-del works, but I can only log out. Is there a way to change back to explorer without another account?

After a while Deamon Tools comes up with an error, but alas, I can't click OK, and when I remove it with task manager, it goes back to a halt.

How can I simply uninstall it, so I can try and reinstall? Or any other work-around for that matter? Cheers.

Oh, and I started up in safe mode, to no avail.

Ok, Safe mode with cmd was a better success. Ran uninstall.exe from the LS directory, and I'm back to Explorer now.

The "workaround" is to install the updated build that fixed the XP login issue. You could have also gone into Task Manager and cancelled LiteStep and reran explorer.exe.

How would I rerun explorer.exe?

Go to "File\New Task" in the upper left corner (I think the Menu Bar is the technical name) and then type "explorer". That's it. Windows XP will do the rest.

Ok, so my problem is persisting. I've read about the SP2 bug, tried to use setshell after a fresh reinstall before reboot, after upgrading, without luck. I'm using classical login, and it's still freezing after I log in. With File -> New Task -> explorer, it only opens up a explorer window, and doesn't start explorer as shell. I dunno if that's how it should be, or not. But it's enough to be able to change back, though.

I'll try a manual install now, but does anyone know what my problem could be?

You could try the manual install, like you said, but the litestep.com wiki is down >.< Hopefully it will be up again when you read this: wiki.litestep.com .

Otherwise try a much more up to date installer: http://tlundberg.com/LOSI/LOSI-0.0.9.2.exe

yeah, I was able to get to the install guide on the wiki through google's buffer (God bless it). I'll be trying that installer, fingers crossed.

I'm getting the exact same symptoms with the LOSI installer. Could there be some of my background (tried disabling autostart on Deamon Tools) programs that could be interfering?

I suppose trying a manual install is next.

I've double checked all register keys, I've tried various installs, but it's still the same. No one wanting to guess what the problem might be?

lockups on launching the shell usually occur when a startup program depends on explorer, and locks the system waiting for Explorer to launch. Try booting without any shell, then manually launch litestep with the -nostartup param. (or just hold the shift key down when logging in. Grab Autoruns (from sysinternals.com) and determine which startup program is killing your system. Probably your virus scanner or other malware.

Thanks for the help, jugg. Turned out to be one of many smaller things I prevented from strating on startup, and it now runs smooth. Cheers.
