1. Because it doesnt work like that (like xcal mentions). You can unzip the theme to your $ThemesDir$, make sure its all in the folder (there will be a theme.rc in it) then you can edit themeselect.rc with the new path.

2. Probably you could maybe add shortcuts in your quicklaunch folder directly (docs'n'settings)

3. The "Return to default" popup should always disply.
The errors are due to a poorely designed or bug tasted theme.

4. Some themes are so minimal they will increase performance (theoretically) and some so massive they will crash your comp if its too old.
