When I was running win9x back in the day litestep really helped improve the stability of my system.
That said if you do break something it is a bit more of a hassle to fix it then just hitting ctrl alt del like win2k/xp, so make sure you understand how to uninstall it manually if you do horribly break something so you won't worry if you do.
BTW, did you friend encourage you to get litestep and then say that it will crash? I'm confused... and ps you might want to look into upgrading operating systems away from WinME.
