For New Users - Theme and Shell Thread last updated on 2003-09-12 17:49:48

Please note that a theme is not the same as a shell. A shell is a program which has some builtin options which can be modified by use of a text file. A theme is a set of graphics and settings which modify the look of the shell, add extra features &c.

and yes, by using an alternative shell, your Windows applications WILL work as they're supposed to.

and just because you are using an alternative shell does NOT mean your windows will automatically be skinned.

Hrm.. so when I download LiteStep I wouldn't be downloading a particular theme.. which would just be a program to make them.. I suppose you need to know certian coding for that type of creation..

Ok, I might be stupid as a freaking goat, but i cant get themes installed. something screws up everytime. sometimes its missing dlls, and when i get that going something else screws up. Can anyone please write a step by step to how to install litestep themes on litestep.

Thank you

Posted by member 1783 on 2003-06-06 07:44:23 link

if it's really an ots theme, it's only a matter of copy 'n paste. can't get any simpler than that.
if you've got a specific problem, then post a description of it. probably there's someone who can help.

Posted by member 38460 on 2003-06-10 08:59:07 link

Hi, i solved the problem, just didnt understand it all at once. It was really stupid. But still on some themes i still get error messages like error loading popuser/poppassword and so on.

Posted by member 230 on 2003-06-20 10:47:13 link

Well, get OTS themes. They are the SAFEST bet for everyone.

how do i install themes?

Posted by member 2112 on 2003-07-09 01:41:35 link

"how do i install themes?"

If you are seriously asking this question then litestep is not for you. At least not yet.

LiteStep might not be for you if ...

To install a theme you have to unzip the file into your "themedir" now after youve done that you check if it has any *&^% ups in the "step.rc(themedir)" that clash with your system, if you dont know what to do about that just use your best judgement. Keep in my mind unless you know what your doing all themes wont work. Now after thats done you go to the "step.rc(litestepdir)" and switch the themedir(if you dont know what im talking about then do this) copy and paste from the themedir to the litestepdir that should work to. dont expect to use any theme switchers like that though.

Heh, he answered the question, lol.

You know, instead of telling people not to use the program, an answer similar to panic's would have probably helped a bit more.. Every time I see someone ask a question on this forum, it's always either an 'OMFG LOOK AROUND THE FORUM YOU NOOB' or just a sarcastic reply offering nobody any help whatsoever. It gets to a point where everyone says 'Go look for a thread about this somewhere else on the forum', and on all those other threads, people are telling the ones asking questions to look elsewhere, but very few people actually offer answers.

Whatever.

When you answer the same question over and over and over again day in and day out it grows old. The way I look at that is that we have lazy users who don't want to look...they just want the answer handed to them. We had the same problem here at the office and the only way to truly fix it is to force people to look and learn for themselves. Its tough love but most questions asked have answers within the first screen of forum threads.

I wasn't trying to be rude. But the fact is that LS is not a user friendly program and I'm not going to encourage it's use to anyone who appears to have limited experiance with computers. When you download software from the internet do you e-mail the author to find out how to use it or install it? NO! You open the file and read the documentation. I don't believe anyone who isn't familiar with this basic and standard practice is going to find LS useful. I could imagine the reception I would get if I went onto a PHP forum and asked, "How do I install PHP?".

Having said that, many themes don't contain instructions on how to install it. So for the newbies, if you download a theme that does not contain a readme file with step by step instructions on how to install it (as advised in the Open Theme Standard Requirements - #7) then it is not an OTS theme and should be avoided.

I hate it when this happends "noob", everyone was a noob, so noone got the right to say this to anyone. cause of what you said "fact is that LS is not a user friendly program and I'm not going to encourage it's use to anyone who appears to have limited experiance with computers" .. exactly thats why it is better that they can ask anywhere bevore they think they crash their PC.
Ok things like... "where can I download LS" are realy nothing to talk about, but users who haven't seen LS jet, is it nearly the only way to get any idea how it works. Not everybody in the world is a specialist, but everybody should be an individualist ;)
So I'm glad that they got the right and the place to ask things they don't know.

Here is a stupid question for you guys but Im not to clear on what it stands for.. what is OTS or OTS theme. Everyone says they are the easiest to install and that but what does it actually stand for? This is probably a really stupid question but I couldnt figure it out just reading around. Also can someone tell me the difference between indy litestep and normal??? or refer me to a thread i missed.

Posted by member 1 on 2003-07-15 14:12:25 link

OTS = Open Theme Standard

LiteStep hit a lul in the development and a group of people wanted to work on the code so Indy LS was created. BTW...this really doesn't belong here.

They were talking about noob things and stupid questions so I figured I would contribute. :) Kinda stupid but I was bored at work.

hi i'm a "omfg n00b" and i've just setup litestep and was wondering how i actually got another OTS theme to work? I've followed the readme and changed the RC file so that it points to the new theme and nothing happens???

Posted by member 39367 on 2003-09-06 10:57:34 link

Did you recycle litestep after you changed it.

Posted by member 62440 on 2003-09-12 08:46:05 link

hi, was wondering if anyone has, or new where i could locate a theme. I dont remember the name, but it had somethign to do with DOS, it looked like a giant DOS screen and had a command prompt and stuff. i think it might have been DOS2K or something along those lines
