I'm looking for a theme that keeps the memory usage of litestep to a minimum and yet retains a certain amount of functionality. I'm doing this to try and free up more memory on my gaming machine... its getting a bit old and anything that can make it run better... is just great.

What RAM level are you trying to stay under?

I only have 768Mb of DDR and I'm trying to play TeamFortress 2 on a decent res without FPS lag... so no level in particular, just anything that says lower than Explorer is a improvement.

Right now explorer is running at 23Mb of RAM, and thats common number. I know a lot of themes will let LS run at below 20... anything below 10 would be great.

Just use whatever theme you want and /quit Litestep while you're playing and run no shell at all.

xcal's right, that would be best

Use a theme that does not use bitmaps/images. Only use background colors and no transparency. My own litestep process working set sits between between 2-4mb.

Failing quiting litestep when running a game, hiding all of the modules should help. Although I think the bigger issue is if you are using a litestep module that takes up cpu time, not memory.

I've found a couple low resource themes, but nothing I really liked.

Think I'll just do what I used to do (what xcal and Pyro suggested) and just quit the shell while running games.

Found a couple nice, simple, themes with easy command access like BUUF.

Turning off Litestep isn't going to help you. I'm guessing RAM isn't even your issue at all. Litestep uses all of 16mb for me right now. That will not make any noticeable difference in the performance of your game.

If you are getting low FPS, it's because you are either:

A> Playing a game your computer simply can't handle
B> Playing with settings beyond what your computer can handle
C> Playing with 50 other processes running in the background, otherwise known as trying to game on a Dell

Seeing as how you managed to figure out how to get Litestep running at all and aren't asking how to change your desktop or why your window bars aren't the same style as your theme... I'm guessing you should be smart enough to figure out how to fix one of those problems.

Actualy for the game I am playing "team Fortress 2" even a few extra MB of RAM can make a difference. Since its still in "beta" its not fully optimized and I have a feeling there are still some memory leaks. Simply closing Litestep has had a small improvement, I've cleaned up my startup list of everything not needed, and went through and customized what services started at startup and ran in general, lots of stuff not needed for a gaming PC got disabled.

All together I've managed to free almost 70Mb of RAM on average and it has made my FPS go up SOME... when playing at 16.. the difference between 16 and 25 FPS average is huge. Not like I'm trying to go from 70 FPS to 80.

Thank you for your input guys
