Anyone know if there's a way to have litestep perform a !bang command based on an icon of a given app in the systray changing?

I'd like to have the system tray hidden, but have an indicator (xLabel) light up when my IM app changes to the blinking message icon.

If no one knows of such a technique, anyone think they could code such a module?

Your best bet is probably to ask Andymon to add that to xTray.

He will tell you wether its even possible or not (and maybe code it)
