BeOS theme Thread last updated on 2006-06-01 02:59:52

I found an OTS1 BeOS theme here:

http://www.wincustomize.com/ViewSkin.aspx?SID=1&SkinID=165&LibID=6

and I can't get it to work. I installed LiteStep with Omar's installer 3.0.2, with backwards compatibility enabled. I tried to convert the theme to OTS2, changing the theme's LoadModule calls to NetLoadModule ones, etc., as specified on the OTS2 sourceforge page. However I am no expert (read: completely new to LiteStep) - could someone perhaps convert it? Or know of a good OTS2 BeOS theme?

Thanks a ton!

What isn't working with it?

When I switch to it, the interface from the default theme (which I switched from) disappears, and nothing else happens. The windows are all the same as the default theme, and the taskbar is gone. Then the installer asks if I want to switch back, and since it seems the theme didn't load right (or at all), I click yes.

I think I still have an OTS1 install around here somewhere, lemmie see what happens.

An elegant solution indeed! That would be awesome.

well...first off...its not an OTS1 based theme which is why it doesn't work

How would one get it to work then?

This might help, or give you a better understanding of what's involved.

Yeah, I went through that checklist before I posted, but unfortunately it didn't change the behavior of the theme. I fear the problem is something beyond my (limited) ability to correct.

Yeah...that process doesn't apply to this theme since it was pre-OTS1. You are going to have to find another theme or crash the books hardcore and learn LS from begining to end. It says right in the themes Readme that it was written for LSDistro, so I don't know why you assumed it was OTS compliant.

Because I know virtually nothing about LiteStep. (:

In retrospect, would it be practical/possible to acquire LSDistro to use the theme? (I'm not all that clear on what LSDistro actually is - a previous version of the shell, or a standard?)

Though perhaps I will investigate the learning.

well...its hard to explain. Back in the day there was no standard for releasing themes. Themes came with full builds of LiteStep for compatability. Then the include came along and a couple different Theme standards came along. Theme standards led to distributions. Going back to LSDistro for a single theme is probably a bad idea. Why do you want a BeOS theme that bad...especially one that wasn't even close to actual BeOS.

That does sound undesirably complex. Have you any recommendations for a better BeOS theme?

There were a couple better ones that are quite old...but they would also require a ton of work. When BeOS got bought by Palm and cancelled everyone kinda let that style go. There for a while though the whole tracker thing was kinda hot. I think we have a working theme around here somewhere. Lets see...this is the only one on LSnet...but I have it in Blue on my machine if you want to try it out.
