Problems with Litestep, windows not appearing unless maximised (Sorry, I'm a newb) Thread last updated on 2006-05-08 13:33:26

HI all, recently I downloaded LiteStep and read through some of the instructions, enough to be confident enough to run it. I've managed to get everything running, as well as working themes.

However, whenever I open a window in anything, even an alert box, they won't be visible for more than a second unless I maximise them.

What would the problem be and how can I solve it?

Sounds like perhaps your desktop area settings are off. I had something like that happen once when the bottom edge was "above" the top edge. It's worth a look, at least, although your situation may be different.

How would I go about checking it out? I'm not too sure what you mean.

The module that handles the desktop should either be jdesk or desktop2. Each has its own settings. Look at the documentation that came with each module to see what the setting names are, and search for them in your configuration files.

I've got jDesk 0.73

And the only mention of the jDesk configuration is in the theme.rc file in my current theme. The actual command is "jDeskSetWorkArea 0,0,0,0" and I've tried playing with that, but nothing changed when I recycled Litestep

Could be a vwm issue. You could try !vmwgather in an lsxcommand. Or...

Try this:

1. Open a window - don't maximize it, so it's out of sight (your problem).

2. Assuming the newly opened window has focused, hold ALT and press/release SPACEBAR, then press/release M, then release ALT.

Your mouse cursor should have vanished at this point. It will be centered over the window's caption bar (which is off screen), and have changed to the cross-arrows cursors.

3. Press any arrow key (up/down/left/right) for about a second and release it.

Now the window should be attached to your mouse's movement.

4. Move your mouse around, until you hopefully see the window.

That's about it. Then you can try closing the window and reopening it, to see if it's saved its new position.

Thanks xcal, that's helped. I've found out that all the windows of slipped off to the left. Practically a whole other desktop to the left (My resolution being 1024x768)

Is there a more practical solution to my problem, seeing as not all popup windows have a move function and not all my windows save their position (Windows Task Manager and Windows Live Messenger being two examples). Also, my bottom bar seems to disappear beneath maximised screens

Try WinExplorer - it'll show you where *all* windows are located and let you modify sizes and positions.
