AAAAHG!!! I got the installer and it installed fine but when it loads all it shows is the wall paper and none of the interface or desktop icons. not even the taskbar loads nothing loads..... ever.
Only reason I am here to post this is I loged on as a difernt user. I use win xp pro. plz tell me what went wrong and how to fix it.
Have you tried different themes?
ps: This may sound condescending, but you are aware that Litestep replaces the windows shell? (The shell: Taskbar desktop icons statbutton etc)
Also, have you checked that LiteStep is actually running? If something went wrong with the install you might have ended up with a botched reg key (just a guess though; I've never heard of that happening). Use Task Manager to check if the Litestep.exe process is running.
The lightstep wallpaper loads but nothing els will load. The only way I can controll my pc is to hit ctrl-alt-delete and run a program manualy.
I am aware litestep replaces the windows shell, but it is supose to replace it not get rid of it and put up a nice wallpaper.
I will try reinstalling. I hope it works. I was fairly sure that litestep was running.
Ok I reinstalled and same problem. I noticed that litestep.exe wasnt running. I also hear a windows ding error every time I log on to the user acount that is using litestep.
I ran litestep.exe from that acount and it just closed after less then a split second wwith another ding sound. I ran in on my other acount and got a Theme dir not defined error.
So what is this error? is there a way to manualy define my theme directory? This at least brings me closer to the problem. Dose anyone think reinstalling and choosing a difernt theme directory path might work?
First: did you restart after you installed LS? I've never had trouble, but some people do, if they don't restart. If that's not it...
Export the HKLM and HKCU software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run keys.
Remove everything from them after you export them.
Try again. It sounds like the kind of problem malware would introduce, but if nothing is in startup to do it, or the run keys, that would mean it's not that.
It wouldn't be a bad idea to scan w/ AdAware, Spybot, CWS, and maybe even Hijack This (be careful--HJT will find stuff, but a lot of it will be legit software!). It could also be pre-installed OEM software, or other manufacturer's software, that starts after logon, and really likes Explorer.
I have a program to prevent things from loading on startup. All that is enabled is AVG antivirus logonstudio (for my custom logon screen) and bootskin jobs (for my custom bootskin).
Would any of those do it?
I am 99% sure it is not malware because i Run spybot search and destroy, spyware blaster and adaware often. I have scans set to run aoutomaticaly aswell and theye are aalways kept up to date.
So you are using the default theme? (Austerity)
Because I had issues like this, it was just a module being freaky (lslua)...
if you have a program that stops things from loading on startup, try enabling litestep.exe. whatever program it is may very well allow explorer.exe by name, not the defined shell.
ok thx alot I am going to go get a new theme (any suggestions on a peticularly stable theme) and make sure I add litestep.exe as an entry in my startup stopper.
Also how exactly do I change the default theme while installing? (I know it sounds noobish and well.. I am a noob :P)
Well I did said things but still no taskbar or desktop. I have a system try but that's it.
*sigh* This is beggining to be more trouble then it is worth. I have important things that need doing, and I kinda need to be able to controll my pc to do them. :(
What theme did you try and install?
Ummm It is kinda gone now because I uninstalled litestep so I could continue some model editing i am doing for hl.
If anyone knows a peticularly stable theme plz let me know.
OK, I was going to be a silly *** and bid you farewell with that comment ^^, but I realise that is not cool.
A stable theme I can see in the themes section is
GLOW_V2
This caused no problems what so ever on my setup, and should not for you either.
thx il let you know how it works out.
And thx for not ditching me. ^_^
YAY!! I that them got me close enugh to actualy load with a taskbar. No ions though, but I was able to easily test new thems until I found a 100% stable one (I hope). Now I just need to figure out how to get around and change stuff. I need to find out how to customse the text size. WAY to small.
Install the fonts in your windows fonts folder!
Stored in the themes MISC folder
and the taskbar aint supposed to have icons.
Its great that it worked though!!! w00t!!!
