How do i get my desktop icons back? Im using the elegance theme and i expected me icons from my normal desktop to be there as well as the special stuff for the theme BUT ITS NOT!?!? is there any way to get them to apear, even with the default theme that comes with litestep, only the bottom 2 lines of icons that was on my dekstop show up!?!?

If thers no way to get them back, can some1 show me a url of an uninstall doc where it tells me how to uninstall litestep, as its just stupid without my icons.

okay i'm going to do a bit of ranting first

#1) if you had read the docs, you would know that the desktop icons your talking about is part of the windows shell, if you want icons, either hack something together in litestep, use shortcuts in litestep, or use explorer

#2) for f*ck sakes man, theres a gazillion threads about how to uninstall litestep, not to mention its as easy as uninstalling any other application. add/remove programs, go to litestep, uninstall it. if that fails, run litestep -uninstall, if that fails, go to lsdocs.shellfront.org or lsfaq.shellfront.org and do it manually.

do you want me to help you shake too?

There was no need to flame me ffs, at the time i posted i didnt have time to serach throguh old threads to see if it had details on what im looking for.

1)the docs page is empty, how was i supposed to know there was no icons, why dont they add icons, its quicker to double click an icon then go throguh multiple menus.

2)i didnt know it was that easy, for all i know the uninstaller would just delete litestep, i didnt know it would also rest the .ini and all the other windows settings.

IMO if litestep was more like GNOME for linux, it would be MUCH more popular, having fancy customizable boxes and stuff is one thing, but its slow. eg, if i wanted to run daoc (a mmorpg i play) i would first have to go through multiple menus just to run in, then i would have to go throguh even more menus to run the file with my password in it.

The *point* of LiteStep is that you can set up your desktop to be any way you want it to be. You could have a bazillion icons on your desktop if you wanted...

You shouldn't give us your "IMO" about LiteStep until you actually know something about it.

Posted by member 5669 on 2003-03-13 19:35:44 link

you obviously don't understand the point of litestep nor should you be using it. i'm sorry, i'm usually more helpful to people who are new to LS, but you're just talking out of your ass about things you don't understand.

Well, from what i was told, litestep is basicaly ment to be a fully customizable GUI. I thought it would customize the Windows GUI to allow me to, well, do what it currently does, but allow me to keep certain Windows GUI elements. U cant expect me to know EXCATLY what it does, and what its limits are when there isnt much imformation on the site other then the fact its a customizable GUI.

Just RTFM? LS comes with docs, read them. We've all done it. Don't come in here demanding that it's broken and assume that we all give a shit. LS isn't for the weak of heart, there's some gui config to it, but the people that really use it already know how to fix shit with a good ol' text editor, so there's not much drive to create GUI's for idiots that can't even bother to learn what it is before they install it. This site is only one of many with details on LS, it's all home grown, so the amount of info grows and shrinks as interest of individuals vary. I agree with mojomonkee, LS isn't for everyone, and I won't cry if it stays that way. I don't even tell people about it anymore unless I know they're ready to dig into it and be able to figure it out for themselves... if I don't want to hold my friend's hand through using LS, why would I want to hold yours? much less shake it for you.

Don't blame too much Microsoft-educated people; they're discovering a new world :)
Of course, newbies have to read the docs, but I think too many people guess that Litestep is a Windows skinning app. They can't imaging what is a SHELL RELACEMENT (and the power of it)...
To be continued...

Posted by member 12518 on 2003-03-14 05:06:44 link

I feel most sites do a good job of explaining LS, and what a shell is in general. I also feel its quite a leap in imagination to get LS confused with a
Microsoft Windows GUI GUI editor/configurator. Typically when there is no GUI. WOW!

Those lame people should read more me thinks.

LiteStep is used to get rid of those annoying Microsoft creations.
LiteStep is definitely not slow compared to the normal Microsoft Interface.
If you don't like so many menu's, just find a theme which has shortcut3 or similar in use and change the linkage to your own programs.
I have only had LiteStep for about 3 weeks but I at least understand what LiteStep does and I try to read the documentation that comes with the modules etc. If you don't want to lose your Windows Style Desktop, it's a waste of time instaling LiteStep.

It's newbies like you who make newbies like me look bad.

NeMeSiS - and it is newbies like you I don't mind helping.

People have to explore the endless possibilities litestep before posting questions on this forum for easy help.

Posted by member 6470 on 2003-03-14 10:57:02 link

yeah, it's ok to be a newbie, sometime I feel like one myself, just becuase of all the changes in LS in the 2 years I didn't use it. It's so much easier to use now than it was then, because of OTS, but once you get to the point where you want to modify themes or your personal settings, it does take some know how and research...

in short: Newbies aern't bad, but there's a right and a wrong way to be a newbie... Reading and asking polite questions is the right way, not reading and making ultimatums about how you'll uninstall if your icons don't work is the wrong way to go about it...

Hm, -Dist- seems to think LS is slow *to use* because you have to go through popups for everything. This is silly, you could simply create a *shortcut for it, or use something like DeskFolders. Alternatively, you can run litestep on top of explorer.

I mean if you're gonna complain about litestep being stupid, at least pick a valid complaint.

Just goes to prove, some people are too dumb to use PC's. I was brought up pure Microsoft. I installed LS on night at home, loved it, tinkered with it, DL'd new themes, fixed them so they would work on my PC, and now I'm using it at work. I LOVE it now. If you can't read, or have REALLY basic programming skills (just enough to understand what you're doing in the step.rc and other various config files!) don't bother with LS. You'll just keep posting 20 times a day asking for help with everything, without learning anything, and you'll only end up pissing all of us of (even more).

NeMeSiS - I have used LS since 1999 every single day, at home and at work, and I still consider myself a newbie. There's a lot of thing I still don't understand. The problem seens that this people is too much accostumed to download an installer, run it and... bang, everything is fine. When they found something that require time and reading to learn, they prefer to complain with the app's author.

Litestep is a hobby....I've come to find out - there are people that don't have hobbies...these are sad people...
I picked up my frog, and set him in front of my monitor, and showed him litestep..he just hopped away...I knew I would like it. I'm going to write a song about litestep......

Posted by member 12518 on 2003-03-15 00:30:24 link

Brickle: I think an LS song would be great. Frogs are nice, but when it comes to alt-shelling, they just cant comprehend.

I feel it is also a hobby, and that people that dl installers and click next-next-next-next-next-next-next-next-next- until its done really should be shot.

and I also think this is a great thread, keep it up -Dist-

i apologize for the flaming, there was a smack of these questions at the top and i got a bit grumpy. the thing about litestep is that you can customize it as much as you want. if theres a game you play all the time and you dont want to search through the popups, you can make a hotkey to run everything you need for it at once.

good luck

I afraid frogs can't see the world like ourselves...

btw for all you ppl that told me to read the files and such, well, the reason i coudlnt was because at the time i wrote the post i was at work, thus couldnt read the docs, and was trying to figure it out at work. sorry, but i do read the files, i just couldnt at the time, as i installed it, saw it didnt haev any icons then i had to go to work b4 i was late and didnt have time to read the files b4 i left.

Posted by member 5120 on 2003-03-15 16:48:38 link

lp: Not only can you make a hotkey for it. Literunner can do it all automatically when you start the game.
