Hi

One of my main reasons for experimenting with alternative shells was becuase my explorer.exe task kept hitting 99% and staying there....

I installed Litestep, which I like, but the same thing happens.

It\\\'s like what ever causes explorer.exe to crash, is cuasing the same problem to the LS shell..

I always keep my PC and drivers up-to-date....

Sometimes I can restart the shell (either LS or Explorer) and its OK again for a while, other times the shell(s) wont restart properly and will hit 99% immediately.

does anyone have any advise, apart from a FUll rebuild...

sometimes simply opening up or closing different windows can trigger this

Thanks

Hey, why don;t you try Linux. I know it sounds weird, but really, it's free, it doesn'tcrash, it can run on as little as a 200 mZh pentium with 8 mb of RAM. And as an added bonus, it is very easy to customize, http://www.kde-look.org is one website devoted to customizing just one of the many Desktop environments out there (linux word for shells ;))

Yeah, e-mail me at tah@canada.com for more info about what type of Linux is best for what you want to do, what programs you need, and other stuff like that.

You can run most of you Windows apps under linux too, so you needn't worry about that ;)

'Linux', or more accurately X, does support transparency, although I'm not sure what you mean by 'replace linux interface for litestep'. LS themes do not transfer, if that's what you're talking about, however, the *nix theming communities are much larger than the LS one... still, moving to another OS is not something you just do in an afternoon. Think about it, read about it, get a friend who has done it _first_.

While I have to agree Linux is definatly something all PC users on these forums needs to begin to look into (if they haven't already), this really isn't helping peter with his problem. In fact, it could be causing him more..

Peter: Seriously scan for viruses and ad/spy/malware. If this persits, I'd consider a fresh reinstall of the OS and go from there. It can be easier than attemping to track down all the possible causes of the problem. (I hope it doesn't go this far.) GL with this.
