Windows XP slow shutdown Thread last updated on 2003-03-09 20:07:24

Hi! I've been using LiteStep now for almost 5 months already on a WinXP box, it's been great for the most part, except when it comes to shut downs or log offs; I do so, the box just seems to slow down when it gets to the "saving your settings" part. Any ideas? Thanks! :)

Sadly, no. As long as it's not some module acting up anyway, but I doubt that is it because LS should already have quit at that point. There were similar reports though, some say it went away suddenly. Should you (or anyone else reading this) figure out why this is happening and/or how to get around it please post back here.

I have the same problem although I am sure it isn't caused by LiteStep, because I had it before I installed LiteStep. Sometimes the "Saving your settings" takes 5 (!!!) minutes to save my settings. Maybe it is caused by a big profile.

read somewhere that it's a windows bug that M$ is trying to fix - and should be included in an upcoming service pack.....

Would your XP box happen to be on an NT-based network? If so, is your profile a roaming profile? If that's the case, then trim your profile, and start by deleting your Temporary Internet Files via IE's properties. IE's Temporary Internet Files are not "temporary" at all. HTH

I found this at annoyances.org

I have just installed some windows updates 2 security and one for; 810030: Microsoft VM Security Update (Windows 2000)This update resolves vulnerabilities in Microsoft virtual machine (Microsoft VM). Since I have installed these my computer is VERY slow to shutdown and stops for 60secs exactly on the saving your settings screen, when it used to take about 10-15 secs. I cannot uninstall this, is this causing the slow shutdown?

Hey! Adams suggestion "worked for me"! Thanks! Wouldn't have worried about slow shutdown except I must change hard drives rather often. Changed the "unconfigured" setting to "10". Now shuts down in about 10 seconds(sted 60). I trust might be even faster at "5"? But, I'm happy. Thankx again, Ted

I think this _really_ solves the problem:

It turns out that this is a workaround only, but doesn't actually fix the problem. Go into the Event Viewer -- in the Application Log, you'll see an error at every shutdown, source Userenv, description "Windows cannot unload your registry file...". Enabling the 'maximum retries' setting only reduces the number of times Windows tries from the default of 60 to 5 or 10. Windows is still unable to unload the registry. The problem actually appears to be caused by the installation of Hotfix 329170. Uninstalling the hotfix corrects both the slow boot problem and the underlying registry problem. This was posted by stan g on the Computing.net forum; here is the URL: http://www.computing.net/windows2000/wwwboard/forum/42735.html. During the uninstall process, a warning lists programs that may not function correctly after 329170 is removed. However, this does not appear to be a problem, because the .dll files that are removed during the uninstall are restored to their previous versions. I removed 329170 last week; everything is fine now, and all software is running normally.

Good for you SenexFerox! :)

Trouble is, though, I don't have that kind of problem in my PC. I've installed the recent updates and SP1a, but it's still the same. So, if you guys have any more ideas, I'll appreciate it. Thanks!

"I've installed the recent updates" - "The problem actually appears to be caused by the installation of Hotfix 329170."
are you sure uninstalling that hotfix doesn't solve your problem?

OK, I've reinstalled Windows XP again as well as IndieStep; no hotfixes, no SPs, just 5.1.2600. Still slow. :(
