Problems with LiteStep Thread last updated on 2004-02-22 20:09:18

Okay.

I've had two problems that before I want to connect with LiteStep, I want to see if anyone else has problems as well.

1) Instability when leaving the computer on. I left my computer on overnight (it was on for the entire day too) and when I woke up, I ran two applications. Mozilla Firefox (formerly known as Firebird) and AOL Instant Messenger. However, the computer kept freezing up. AIM would stop responding and the typical blue/round bar at the top would go gray and squarish (or is it supposed to be like that all the time?) every, well, roughly every 10 seconds. It would stay like that for about two minutes and then cycle again. After rebooting, I did not have this problem. However, after leaving it on for about 4 hours, I found that my internet has become increasingly slow. Yet on other computers hooked to the same modem, it is not slow at all.

2) Incompatibility with games. I was playing Counter-Strike using LiteStep, but stopped in frustration because I had a ping of over 200. I am using cable internet and my ping is almost never over 100. Now my ping has gone to 200 and I couldn't play the game at all. So I stopped. When I stopped, I found that the applications could not have focus using the taskbar. I had to use alt-tab to get the focus of my applications that were running.

I am running Windows XP on an AMD Athlon XP1800+ CPU. My gfx card is a NVIDIA GeForce 4 MX 440 and it is having problems being recognized (a.k.a. I am having major graphics-card problems that no one out of 3 troubleshooting sites I have posted in have been able to fix). 512 MB of RAM (DDR). It was built at home.

Thanks!

Hurm... If your theme makes excessive use of lstransparent you could see such problems with games, but other than that I can't really think of anything. I (and lots of others I assume) have a very similar setup (except that my CPU isn't quite as fast) and I've never had any such problems. Try loading LS with no modules at all, if that fixes it we need to track down the buggy module.

Okay, thanks. I'll try that and post back when/if I find a buggy module.

If it helps, I'm running the default theme.

The "squarish" title bar can occur when an application is hanging; basically, the XP theme engine stalls and the window chrome from the basic UI shows through.

What might help is to open the task manager, select the hanging application in the applications tab, right click and select "go to process." If this ends up highlighting csrss.exe, your problem is most likely a GDI leak somewhere... possibly related to a module, or to a completely different program. Do not kill the csrss process, tho.

If this is what ends up happening, keep an eye on what programs you've had running for any length of time. You may also find it useful to download a copy of GDI Resource Saver and see if that uncovers any problems:

I disabled a module and haven't had any problems.

This module was
ckhotspots-2.3=$litestepdir$modules\ckhotspots-2.3\ckHotspots.dll
