Hey guys,
I'm runnin win 98 se and i just installed litestep (i've tried this with the standard distro, the indie, and the ez distro) and when i reboot into windows litestep tells me that im running another shell and that this may cause problems, then everything loads fine except the systray doesn't load any icons or anything. I've checked the system.ini and it's set to shell=c:\litestep\litestep.exe, and i cant think of what else this could be caused by. I'm running window blinds and some other stardock apps (not objectbar though) but i can't see how they'd be affecting litestep. Can anyone help me with this?

oops....forgot to mention...i've checked the systray.dll docs and found no help there, and found nothing in any of the .rc's or .ini's that would account for the detection of another shell...
make sure that in your system.ini you only have one shell= line. Also make sure that you are not running DesktopX which is a Stardock shell in your startup folder.
my system .ini has a line with shell=litestep but i kept another with *shell=explorer for ease of switching...i had a previous build of ls that did this to the sys.ini when it installed so could that be the problem. also i'm not runnin desktopx...
tnx tho...further comments definitely welcome
*shell=explorer is your problem. should be a ; in front instead of a *.
D'Oh-eth...my bad...k...i'll try that. Im hopin it'll work. it's the only thing i havent been able to get workin in litestep and its bugging me because it makes accessing my firewall and my dial-up connection (yeah i know....no one uses dialup anymore :P) a pain in the posterior. thanx DeViLbOi, I'll keep u posted.
ok...i made it so shell=c:\litestep\litestep.exe
but it still tells me im running another shell...i even removed all of my object desktop stuffs and still no go. Why does it keep telling me im running another shell...i havent been able to find any help in the faq and docs...and my systray still isnt working...can anyone help?
It'll say that if it detects another systray. That used to be (and still is) the most reliable method to detect other shells. Make sure there's no trayserver or something like that left anywhere.
ahhhh.....ok...that could be it....that in one of the rc's?
If you've run desktopX before then you probably have a trayserver.exe getting run somewhere on startup
i never ran desktop x though is the thing. I even disabled systray.exe in the registry. That didn't help. It's still popping up that warning that litestep detected another shell etc. and i still havent been able to get my system tray to work. I'm running the Hacker.os theme and it runs flawlessly ....aside from the lack of system tray icons. if anyone else has any ideas i'd appreciate them.
please post a list of your other startup entries...maybe we will be able to identify something "unusual"...
disabling SysTray.exe should have been the solution, if litestep really detects other shells by searching for another loaded systray.
well thanx for all your help guys but after a long nite of searching i found the cause of my problems. It was actually a service that was behind it all...called 1a:stardock traymonitor...as soon as i had disabled it and rebooted the message saying i was trying to use two shells went away AND i got my system tray icons. Couldn't have done it without ur help.

Hrm. That'sa new one if it was an NT service. Do you know which app installed it?
im guessing objectbar from the object desktop suite of prog's. I had it installed before going over to litestep. It's not NT either it a 98 thing i believe. I'm just glad i finally got everything workin....if i had to go over code in another .rc i think i'd flip. Next project i think i'll try n make my own theme...maybe i should reserve a padded cell at the mental hospital now tho...:P
"if i had to go over code in another .rc i think i'd flip"
uh, then you're not gonna like litestep too much. configuring it, for new themes, new abilities, etc. is ALL ABOUT .rc editing.
This has been really helpful. I just started using LS last night and been reading and manipulating and undoing and redoing and reading and repeating for the longest time. I would have never thought that would be the problem especially since I'm not using any stardock problems. After reading this I went through MSCONFIG and found that my computer was starting the same thing and I'm running ME. Also I didn't keep recieving the meesage that I'm running another shell.
Am I ever glad I found this post. I just installed LiteStep last night and was encountering the same problem. I am also running ME (stop shaking your heads in pity!). I know for a fact that I have at least one other tray monitor loading at start up and I haven't a clue which of many programs I have installed to try out in the past may have put it there. I will try disabling it and hope it solves the problem.
