Few issues on IBM Thinkpad Thread last updated on 2004-01-06 10:17:29

Wow, after writing this, it got quite long... anyone that reads through it and can provide help gets much appreciation from me.
To get right to the points, they're listed at the bottom.

Ok, I'm still fairly new to Litestep. I had originally messed with it right before the installer was made for Windows XP, but didn't use it very long, and am now coming back to it.

Anyway, maybe I've missed something... if so, if someone could point me in the right direction, I'd be most greatful... otherwise direct help is even better.

As stated in the title, I'm using an IBM Thinkpad T30 to run Litestep on (under Windows XP). I'm using Litestep 0.24.6, and at the moment am switching between the PixOffice, Thin, and Formality themes (if that may help in a solution). I'll just run through them and get to the point:

- The ultranav software for the trackpoint and touchpad on it don't seem to work. It doesn't seem to load properly on startup or something, so I can only use the very basic features of the mouse, but nothing more.

- When using Explorer as my file manager (the only thing I've tried so far), whenever I right-click a folder and choose "search" nothing happens. Also, when I download something in MyIE2, when I choose "open directory" after it's done, nothing happens as well. Is this an issue with XP, or Explorer, or....?

- The fonts on some themes (notably PixOffice and Formality) in the taskbar seem weird looking... kind of blocky or blurry or something. I have the smooth font option enabled with cleartype, and it doesn't help any. I've tried changing the font from Tahoma to Arial or something, changing the size, boldness.... but nothing will "fix" this. It makes things difficult to read.

I think those 3 things are what's really stumping me at the moment. Again, if I've overlooked something that's already documented, please just point me in the right direction and I'll go read up on it and go from there. I hope someone will be able to help me resolve this.

1 - find the exe file for the mouse software and put a shortcut in your startup directory... that should make them run on startup.

2 - this is because the find files dialog is part of the shell, and litestep doesnt have it built in... use find.exe or another program like agent ransack to search for files. i dont know anything about myie2, so i cant help you there.

3 - you probably dont have the font that the theme is supposed to use installed. check the theme directory and see if there are any fonts... it would probably be in the misc directory. otherwise im not sure.

Try 0.24.7 RC1, it may fix some of the startup programs problems.

Ok, first off, thanks a LOT for the help. I'll run through the points again to keep it simple:

1 - I couldn't find an exe for it for some reason, so I ended up reinstalling it (and I updated to 0.24.7 RC1) and it seems to work now.

2 - I installed Agent Ransack. That works GREAT, thanks a lot. I made an entry to it in my popup for easy access.

3 - I had already installed the font the themes used, but it still seems to look funny. I tried reinstalling the font to see if it was just corrupt or something, but to no avail.

For the most part things are ok now, except the font issue. Thanks a lot for the input already, and if anyone happens to have any further ideas on it, I'm willing to give it a shot.

Hrm... are the fonts seriously messed up or are they displayed as if ClearType wasn't enabled? Maybe cleartype doesn't have an effect on some LS modules... it'd be the first time i hear about it, but it'd also be a bug that needs to be fixed.

I'll get a screenshot of it and post a link to it... gimme a few minutes.

edit:

ok, here's a link to it. It's a full shot, to show that the text across the top works fine, but the text in the taskbar at the bottom is messed up.

Which font does the taskbar use? Is it the same that's used at the top?

According to the theme.rc file, the text up top is "hooge 05_55 caps" (which I've installed in my fonts folder) and the bottom text is supposed to be Tahoma.

I've tried changing it to Arial and hooge 05_55 caps, but it doesn't help any. I can tell a slight difference where the font changes, but it's still the same blockiness.

afaik there are two fonts called "hooge", they have exactly the same name but look different. Maybe you got the wrong one... Check if the theme includes any font files.

I have 2 of the hooge fonts, but the other is hooge 05_53. And yes, the one I have installed that this theme uses came along with the theme.
