Is it possible to change your user name? Thread last updated on 2004-01-02 12:57:37

I'm sure this has probably been asked already but when I try and search for that I find tons of threads that have all of those items anywhere in the thread and not actually answering that question... I am looking for a way to change my user name since I have been having some problems with installing themes and my guess is that it is b/c there is a space in the user name as the error shows up saying "module erorr in /users/X" where the user name is "X Y"

well... what you *should* do is write a nice email to the creators of those themes, pointing out the problem, and possibly directing them here... this is unfortunately a fairly widespread problem, but hopefully one that will go away with time.

I guess based on that response there is no easy way to change a user name and that I should look for a theme that does follow those standards. Is it safe to assume that the themes linked on this site under the OTS2 part all should not have that problem?

not a safe assumption at all. what you will want to do is create another user on your system that does not have a space in it. login as that user and rename your ots profile directory or move it to the new login id. OR you can fix the themes by putting quotes around everything that could at some point have used your username. ie $ConfigDir$ has to become "$ConfigDir$"

you can change usernames in Windows. however, doing so does not change the path of the user directory, which is the actual issue here (dunno why it doesn't, but it doesn't, at least not in 2000). do what dev suggested, that should fix it.

Maybe it can't change the path only if you change the name of the user that's currently logged in? The reason would be that files in that directory are in use... never tried renaming any users, I'm just guessing. :P

not sure, I've only done it a couple times (when ladies get married, and insist on us changing ALL of their accounts to their new name - god I hate them) and each time the directory name didn't change.
