E-mail contents of subscriptions Thread last updated on 2003-11-20 21:09:35

I think it'd be great if you could select options in your profile to receive e-mail notification on every update to a subscribed thread, not just the first update for each thread, and an option to display the contents of the new post in the e-mail.

Doesn't seem like something that would be too hard to implement, I think they had that feature on litestep.com or some other litestep site I used to go to..

umnn... u do receive an email on each reply to any subscribed thread. I know this because I've subscribed to several threads myself and the notification has worked just fine.

hmm must work differently for you than me, I only get an email for the FIRST reply to any given thread, so if 5 people reply before I next log onto litestep.net, I only get 1 e-mail. If there are 5 threads that I've subscribed to and 8-12 new replies in each one, I still only get 5 e-mails.

That's a fine default setting as it reduces in-box-clutter, but I'd like to be able to enable notification for each reply, so that when the feature is implemented to include the contents of the reply in the e-mail notification, I can quickly scan through peoples' replies to see if it's worth loading a browser, logging into litestep.net, then switching back to my e-mail client and clicking the link to the update, or whether it's just someone saying "Amen brutha!" in which case it's not worth the effort of all that just to read the 2 words ;)

I think you will find that this is how most (if not all) forums work. It seems to be the prefered method. Possibly to save bandwidth and server load.

DrWorm's right. Yes, you do only get one email until you visit the board again, it should say so in the email itself.

It does say so on the e-mail itself.. I'm not confused as to why this is happening or thinking it's a bug or anything, I just think people should have the option of being alerted to each reply, and have the contents of the reply in the e-mail,

Right now you have to scan your emails, click a link to bring up a browser, log into ls.net, click the link again to go to the thread, and only then be able to read the reply to see whether it was worth all that effort in the first place.

With those features enabled, you could just scan through your e-mails and if all the replies are things like "I agree" or "lol" then you don't have to bother with loading a browser or the login routine.

When I see room for more efficiency I like to set the wheels in motion to have that efficiency implemented and help things like litestep and ls.net achieve their full potential.

It might put more load on the server's e-mail bot, but it would result in less load on the web server and less load on each individual user who chooses to employ these features.

Actually...it is the same load because it is the same box...since we aren't lame using IIS for our BS. And one reason websites don't do this is because they don't want to be blacklisted by automated spam services. I already get about 10 emails a day for spam bots wanting me to authenticate emails for sign-up...I don't need any more.

lol hadn't thought of that.

yet another reason why the world would be a better place if spam had never been invented (or if the death penalty were to be applied for any unsolicited advertisement from any agency, person, IP address, email address, etc)
