Litestep consuming system resources Thread last updated on 2006-11-02 15:04:32

I've noticed after installing Litestep that it uses considerably less memory, but after leaving my computer on overnight (which I do all the time), LS has begun to consume all of my processor power. When I open the Task Manager, it shows LS as using up anywhere from 80% to 100% of the total CPU time, and MBM and the CPU display for [noir] both display 100% CPU usage. Could somebody explain what it is that's causing this?

Posted by member 17951 on 2003-07-25 16:56:16 link

does it remain at 100% or does it come back down to 80%

well, i haven't tried just running an empty litestep in the background, but it's usually tied to a specific module that you are using

It hovers around 100%, but it's not one steady 100%; there's a little bit of variation.

I'm using [noir] v 1.5, and I haven't modified it yet (except extending the length of the taskbar, but I don't think that should have much impact), so I'm running whatever modules are standard for [noir] 1.5

I'm having a similar problem: I've been using Litestep for about a year now, and have never had problems with the CPU percentage, but in the last few days it's often jumped up to 80%-100%. If I kill LS and restart it, it'll usually sort itself out at first, but will eventually be back to really high CPU usage.

Disable Windows Update.
Manually update from the MS website.

Shocking...this thread always comes around on the Friday after a Tuesday. :p Wonder why that is...

That seems to work; thanks. Although I'm not too fond of that red shield icon that's now there.

Posted by member 1 on 2006-10-13 18:56:20 link

so hide it

Posted by member 250843 on 2006-10-13 19:07:38 link

Hide which? The icon, or my tray? My tray already auto-hides, so it's not usually a problem, just when I go to the tray.

Posted by member 1 on 2006-10-13 21:17:59 link

You can hide the icon from the tray altogether. You have the power...you have the ability. Now for that training stuff...read the docs on your systray module. That'll do her just fine.

Only one problem - it's happening again. Not as severely, but Litestep is currently using 30%-50% of my CPU. Any other ideas?

finish taking the MS Updates?

Posted by member 250843 on 2006-10-13 23:36:44 link

Oh? I thought you just meant to turn the auto-update off, not to immediately download any updates. I'll try that and get back to you.

Posted by member 248213 on 2006-10-14 00:37:23 link

I can not understand how you could think that.

I said:
"Disable Windows Update.
Manually update from the MS website."

Posted by member 250843 on 2006-10-14 08:41:50 link

That's what I'm talking about; I did turn off the Update program. I was confused by DeViLbOi's question "finish taking the MS Updates?" I took that to mean that I should go ahead and make sure I had gotten all the updates from the website, which I then did.

There is still a system service that monitors it and lets you know that the updates are out there. It puts a systray icon out there that blinks really quickly and keeps the systray busy raising your CPU usage. Just shutting off AutoUpdates doesn't help.

Posted by member 250843 on 2006-10-14 12:13:53 link

Ok, I shut off the service and disabled it during startup, but it's still running (I rebooted), and Litestep's back to using 80%-100% of my CPU.

Posted by member 248213 on 2006-10-14 19:05:58 link

Make the service start only manually (not automatic)

Posted by member 250843 on 2006-10-14 20:09:12 link

I set it to disabled, but I'll try manual.

Posted by member 1885 on 2006-10-15 01:09:23 link

Keep it disabled, there's obviously something else causing this...

I have some more information: some other processes have started doing this as well - Thunderbird, most notably, and occasionally Miranda, and once the Task Manager. Since this seems like more than a Litestep problem, where do you guys suggest I start asking for help, in addition to from my computer manufacturer?

Posted by member 5575 on 2006-10-18 11:28:46 link

I'd suggest running a good virus/spyware scan, in addition to any you already have installed. One of the free online scans might catch something yours has missed.

If your machine is clean, maybe it's some sort of driver issue. Buggy drivers can cause the most mysterious problems.

Posted by member 250843 on 2006-10-18 14:13:41 link

Ok, if it is a driver issue, how would I go about fixing it? Would I have to re-install every driver I can think of, or is there some way to check for corrupt drivers?

Posted by member 250843 on 2006-10-24 21:18:16 link

Anyone have any help with this, please?

Posted by member 5575 on 2006-10-25 00:29:08 link

Sound card and graphics card are the two obvious places to check first. You can just uninstall your sound card in the device manager and see if anything changes; it should reinstall the device when you reboot. The graphics card is probably not so easy - visit the mfr.'s website and DL the latest.

I recently had to re-install my firewall (Zone Alarm), and have noticed that something like "an alternative Windows shell 32" (or similarly named), which I presume to be related toLitestep will periodically try to access the internet. I have been temporarily denying the access, and I have noticed that the Litestep isn't using lots of CPU resources. Not sure if this is a bug or a virus, but TrendMicro's housecall online scan and AVG Free do not find any viruses.

Sounds like some module for your theme is trying to poll the Internet for something, most likely a xLabel. How does this have anything to do with your original post?

Posted by member 250843 on 2006-11-02 11:43:17 link

Because, like I said, when I refuse access, CPU usage does not rise.

Posted by member 1 on 2006-11-02 11:46:37 link

so when you allow access it goes up?

Posted by member 250843 on 2006-11-02 11:52:06 link

Yes.

Posted by member 1 on 2006-11-02 12:19:23 link

That tells me that your theme is having problems processing something from the Internet. Do you have a weather checking script or mail checking script enabled in your config?

Posted by member 250843 on 2006-11-02 15:04:32 link

Nope. I have a Rainmeter config for weather, but not in the theme itself (Mire's the theme, if you're familiar with it).
