I am new to LiteStep and am having a horrible time installing LS on my windows XP machine. I have tried several times with no success. I am using an installer (2.1) and when I reboot after installation it spikes my CPU usage to 100% and there is no theme loaded so I have to go to a command line to find anything. Please help!

I had similar problems after reinstalling LS, after upgrading to XP, since i was only running a system slightly above the minimum requirements, however, all of the programs loaded into my startup sequence was just hogging my system resourses and making my system stall.

Now, Maximum PC ran an article on "How to put Windows XP on a Diet", in thier Nov. or Dec. Issue, and it gave detailed directions to eliminate unneeded processes at startup, and programs that come with xp's initial install that you never use. You should see if you can find the issue, if not drop me a line, i'll see what i can do about getting a reprint.

Hallowed, putting xp on a diet sounds like some really useful information that a lot of people could do something with.. I couldn't find any article on it at maximumPC's website, so maybe you can grace us with a post on exactly what corners can be cut?

There was a report that Windows XP will sit at an idle state and wait a few seconds before it loads the shell if it is not Explorer. Nobody seems to be able to deny or confirm it, but that was the word that I heard.

yeah.. it does that if you're using the "Welcome" screen.. if you switch that off (meaning you revert to using win2k style ctrl+alt+del before you login) it loads in a sec!

I had a similar problem. What I did was the download the distro pack and that helped me load some skins successfully. Other skins, you have to mess around with the .rc files and stuff.

Umm...you can probably find something like that on tweaktown.com
I'll find the direct article and post a link...It may not be the same thing you read on maximum pc though.

http://www.tweaktown.com/document.php?dType=guide&dId=324&dPage=7

It's the seventh page to a tweaktown article titled "installing xp reformat to relax" or something like that. It shows you a bunch of programs they say you don't need starting up. Does it say basically the same thing? Be sure you know what your diabling though.

Howdy,

I know I won't be very helpful in this area as LiteStep works for me... Here's my stats: Dell 8100, PIII 866MHZ, 512RAM, GeForce2 16MB, XP Pro ver 2002 (Corp Ed, SP1 not installed) LiteStep 0.24.6, theme: simplicity.

I have some bugs, but mostly I think it's GeForce2 related. One thing that is annoying is the Shortcut tray sometimes keeps "pieces" of programs displayed (if a proggie sits on top of it, and then is closed). Recycling seems to clean it up.

The install was smooth. I do see a delay when using the Welcoming screen. I installed with 2.1 also. Very clean, very nice.

disabling--ack. On a side note disabling the task scheduler will effectively disable norton anti-virus auto update.
