Ok...the source for the Themes section has been cracked and a programmer is looking at it, isn't that amazing? I had a list of features that I wanted added, does anyone else have something they want?

I would love to be able to search the themes. By name definitely, maybe by type (bar, popup, etc)?

I'm with deuce!

You can search by type already...name search could be added.

how about a peruser stat thing ...

i would like if there was theme's name under the screenshot in the themes-list.

I'd like a sort by downloads...that's how I usually find themes that are worthwhile.

not gonna happen...sorry...causes too many problems.

Posted by member 39367 on 2003-06-29 22:29:11 link

Why cant there be different sort options? Sorry if im being pushy :-)

"not gonna happen...sorry..."

And rightly so. The number of downloads is not an idication of how good a theme is. Nor is votes. These only show how appealing a screenshot is. Often it's the wallpaper that sells a theme.

Though I would like to see something like an editors choice. No rating or awards, just an opinion by an authority.

I agree with doc. Wallpapers do have a big say in what's downloaded, and what's not. However, I've tried not paying attention to the wallpaper, and only looking at the actual theme - the popup, the bar (if there is one), etc. I'm not sure about the editor's choice thing for one reason, though. The editor is only one person. He has his likes and dislikes. Now, just because he/she dislikes a theme, doesn't mean it's a good theme. It could be a really nice theme, just not his cup of tea.

And which person would want to rate every single theme in the litestep.net archive?

EDIT: deuce thats what i meant when i said "litestep.net archive", as in all the themes stored here.

Posted by member 1316 on 2003-06-30 14:25:50 link

well, goat, we don't get THAT many new themes. a couple per week, usually. The longest part there would be the initial rating, getting all the current themes. now, THAT would suck.

I'm with Egonz in that I would like to have a bit more info on the thumbnail browsing (at least the theme title, then the author would also be nice)

Posted by member 1 on 2003-06-30 17:19:01 link

switch to the description view...yes there will be an option soon that will save the info.

"And which person would want to rate every single theme in the litestep.net archive?"

If this a response to my suggestion I didn't mean to have someone rate every theme. Like I said, I don't even like the idea of ratings. My idea was that every now and again if a designated authority/authories saw a theme they felt would be good for newbies or is unique it could be given a mention. I noticed shell-shocked does this in it's newsletter.

I would prefer to have the rating system installed, therefore we know how good a theme is before downloading. And maybe a section for each themes for users to report bugs found on each machine, and the solution to each problem. And for themes which have different versions on the site should be grouped together in one page, makes it all that much more tidy.

Posted by member 1316 on 2003-07-01 09:37:32 link

unpageable, ratings are hit and miss though. your theme could be geared to one niche group (people who like port themes), but it could be reviewed by 20 people who only like bar themes, who then give the theme a bad review. besides, I believe someone said a while ago they wouldn't be enabling ratings, so this is a moot conversation.

Posted by member 1428 on 2003-07-01 22:56:17 link

Ratings are unreliable at best, at least downloads generate half-decent results. With ratings you can mess up a person's rating by voting the least amount just because you hate them. If you think there's a better (and easier..) solution, then be my guest. The authority ratings feature is too reliant on individual opinion and makes a lot of work for them to do.

Downloads have been prone to the same problems. People by design want to be on top and tend to push up the download counts on themes. Ill come up with something...I promise.

Posted by member 1428 on 2003-07-02 21:29:57 link

I just want good themes :P. Don't care how.

Posted by member 1 on 2003-07-02 21:39:00 link

talk to the themers...not the site

Posted by member 1428 on 2003-07-04 00:11:58 link

Let me rephrase that :). I'd like to see an easy method of finding the best themes available on the site.

Posted by member 13 on 2003-07-04 01:56:15 link

what about giving a few selected persons "moderating power"and X mod points per week/month? Or let a few select people grade themes from 1-10

That way you can control how many people are voting and you can prevent abuses

I said I would get something figured out. Since nobody seems to be able to drop this subject and get more onto the section I am closing up this thread.
