hrm, i see many people running 1280x1024
do you know that's not a 'real' resolution?
a monitor resolution is meant to be 4:3 - that is, 1.333333 times wider than it is tall. 1280x1024 on the other hand, is 1.25 times wider, so everything you see onscreen is being warped.
