If your theme doesn't show desktop icons, here is the absolute-minimal way to get there:
hit ctrl-alt-del
run "explorer C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Desktop"
Click on 'Set Shell to Explorer'

Hopefully you'll change 'UserName' to whatever your username is...
