Don't make a theme from scratch just yet. Find a minimal theme that doesn't use a bunch of different .rc - files, and tweak it. Add a module here, remove one there, and sooner or later the theme will look less like the original and more like "yours".

When you've gotten the hang of it... do it all over with a slightly more advanced theme ;) When that seems too easy for you, you're ready!
