Is it dangerous? Thread last updated on 2003-05-05 07:04:32

I tried LiteStep once. But I didn't know how to get my regular Windows setup back so I uninstalled it (!). I have some questions though...

1. Is this dangerous? Can it mess up my hard drive/registry or can I just safely uninstall it w/o problems like I did?

2. Does it affect all users, because I am not the only one who uses this computer (i.e. this is a multi-user Win98 PC). I want to be the only one that is affected.

Thanks x 1,000,000!!!

1) Only if you don't understand text editing and basic PC diagnostic application use like "edit"

2) Install yourself a shell manager instead of LS as your shell and you are good to go.

1) it's not dangerous, easy to install-uninstall (just one change in system.ini).
2) on 98 affects all users, you could use a shellmanager like shellon or carapace, and set it to use litestep on your user only.

1) "Edit"... What's that mean?? Just kidding. I get it.
2) I'll go ahead and try those programs.

Thank you for a quick response!

Wait, Can I use ShellWM. That's what I run now.

Oh, I just answered my own question. ShellWM does not yet support Litestep.

you may want to considier 2000 or xp at some point, it really is nicer. It allows per-user shells (i don't use a shell manager) and it handles alpha transparency like what is used in many themes.

ShellWM is developed by ls developers...

ShellWM will work with litestep. It doesn't support litestep in the sense that you can't write a theme that will automatically select a matching ShellWM theme.

Thanks, I'm gonna buy a new computer in a few months, and i'll probably get xp (And dual-boot w/ linux but that's a different story). For now I'll deal w/ win98.

actually I bet you could write a theme that'll automatically select a matching ShellWM-skin... it'd take some mzscripting here and maybe a .vbs there and some trying and failing, but I bet it's feasible.
