In the effort to eliminate all that is Microsoft, I've noticed in more than one theme that instead of IE it assumes Crazy Browser to be you default web browser. What are the favorites, and is it worth stopping use of IE? I haven't found a good enough reason yet...
Many people can not stand a lot of things that MS does not include. For example I run Phoenix as my Primary Browser. It has tabbed browsing and a popup blocker built in. It has also been very reliable and doesn't hurt the resources as much as Mozilla. However, with IE you do get many web pages to render differently, sometiems more like the author intended, but not necessarily correctly. Its all personal preference...so play...it can't hurt.
Phoenix sounds pretty good, I'll give it a shot. Found it by searching, but all I'm finding look like betas. Is it not completed? If so, is it pretty stable?
A lot of beta softwares that's not from Micro$oft, works better than the final versions of MS softwares :)
I use Opera as my browser and I'm pretty happy with it.
Stick with IE. Overlord Gates commands it.
I dont understand why people try to get away from Microsoft stuff anyway. Big Bill has like 50 gazillion dollars, he must be doing something right. IE works fine. Sure popup blockers are cool and all, but the only sites that have a lot of popups are porn/warez and those are naughty and if you go to those I'll tell your mommy. I guess tabbed browsing is cool too, but I'd rather run a new window, just me though.
IE is a great piece of s**t... Big Bill has Gazillion dollars not because his doing something right, it's because he's stealing your money and other's people software, and he has a very strong predatory actitude in his relations with his customers. Just my thoughts...
All that said, I've been using IE 5.5 for a long time and it does work fine. No real complaints. My two cents on Bill is that he's a theiving SOB, but screw his character. We're all stuck with windows for the most part. Just lookin' for something different that might suit my tastes better. Since we're all using Litestep, we've all found something that we like better, let me rephrase, a s**tload better than explorer. I'm figuring that there's something better than IE as well. Thanks to all for the feedback.
I love opera. mainly because of the mouse gestures and tabbed browsing. also, it's a lot faster.
Opera/Explorer. Never liked netscape/mozilla.
sylus, you want to eliminate all Microsoft's products from you PC?.. Remove Windows, my dear...
But seriously... I like Opera and use it, but there is a problem with memory usage in it... hmmm... A BIG problem... May be memory leaks, may be something else, but in any case it eats about 30-40 MBs after opening of 3-4 pages and 15 minutes of work.
Forget about alternative browsers - IE is VERY good, and it is much better to use it with any suit - you'll get features of any browser with IE engine (it is one of the best engines, believe me). If you want something new for you surfing - primary try to find suit for IE - it is better to install it than to fight against different bugs of hacker-nism's personal written browser... May be NetCaptor will help you in your fight with Microsoft :)
Well, maybe I should have said cope-with rather than eliminate....
the IE engine is still an old version of the Mozilla engine so I don't want to hear any of that. Browsers are a personal preference just like everything else. With how I am now I don't know how I ever survived without tabbed browsing. And as for the popup adds only coming from porn sites try going to espn or cnn. Popups all around.
I use Phoenix. It's like IE, except stable, secure, and not made by microsoft. I know that statement was redudant. It's just as fast as IE, and better in every other way.
I don't wanna know what rendering engines you've been using to consider IE one of the best, I'd put it in distant third.
I haven't had any problems with IE in the "stable" department. However, i've had my eye on Pheonix or should we say FireBird now ;)
-Vpr
I use Mozilla as my browser. I'll admit, IE isn't a bad Browser, but I prefer Mozilla simply because of tabbed browsing. That's also why I use GAIM. Both Mozilla and GAIM have their minor flaws that might wanna make you switch back to IE or AIM/AIM+/DeadAIM...but most get use to it.
If you use Mozilla just because of the tabbing you should definitely try Phoenix/Firebird.
Well I decided to download Firebird. I'm using it now. Not much of a difference so far. Images sometimes load weird but are fine in the end, and tableborders look different then I am used to. But it's a nice browser, I might continue to use it. Maybe at least to check my site for compatibility.
Shellweb does a fine job with the IE-engine. tabs and mouse-gestures in there too.
still prefer Opera, though ;)
I've tried Shellweb for a while and switch back to CrazyBrowser. Never take a look at Phoenix (or FireBird), but I will surely...
Whatever happened with the Neoplanet browser? Anyone still use it?
lol neoplanet... I used to use it but its just a skin for IE its not an independent app.
Opera 7.10 is cram packed with features and also tries to keep in line with w3c, and at the same time has some non-standard M$ 'standards' to make the browser more compatible with web browsing. Opera has pop-up killers, tabular browsing, email, news reader, notes, hot keys and best of all you can open new windows within Opera itself! It's fast, user fiendly and skinnable. Bla bla etc - you should try it. And in regards to inform-sega's memory problem, that may be an issue with the M$ Java engine. I don't have memory problems and I've got a slow what was I talking about?
IE works great eh? haha, put "[input type=crash] [/input]" in an html document and it will crash IE ^^ (actually its enough with an empty html document with just "[input type]" in it :D) (
slaner.com if you want to try it out)
I use mozilla firebird (aka phoenix) and i love it!
*[] = html brackets. seems like these forums didnt like the usual ones
Now that I've given Firebird a run for the money (... wonder whether that means anything when it's free...), I gotta say that it's a damn fine browser! Add a few gestures and stuff in there, and it's my first choice browser, actually! Come a long way even in the few months since I last tried it (November, I think)!
hmmm... is "d*mn" actually not allowed here? Why's a word like that censored??
/me is baffled
no klew...lemmie go look at the list and fix it up
heh, don't think of me as someone who desperately needs bad language to be a part of my posts though ;)
what?!
ie = mosaic (upgraded)
moz = gecko
those are 2 completely different engine
maybe ms has gazillion of dollars and has the best browser but why can't ie manage png alpha trans and css2 then? why do i have this crapy tool to sort my bookmarks? why is it unable to REALLY delete cookies? why does ie 'themes' are fucking jokes?
btw, crazy browser is 'just' a layer over ie
main task of a brower is to render html.. ie don't follow html and xhtml specifications.. because of that a fact standard will oblige designers to code w/ mistakes..
end-user consumer don't see it, that's why ie is largely considered 'good'
I think he was talking about netscape/mozilla 4.x
and IE *can* manage png alpha, but just not automatically. Maybe there's something in the water up there in Washington?
oh yeah.. that's cool : )
but "ie engine is an older version of mozilla" is definitely wrong.. mozilla was launched w/ gecko very quicly and that's what make the major difference between them. but i recently read that a lot of people still use netscape 4.xx etc so i don't know.. anyway..
are you refering to the directx tricks for png?
Opera has been ruling this world for 4 years.
but with Opera you can't look for
dixie chicks naked cover!
Mozilla has always been the internal name for Netscape's Navigator. That's why there was always an "about:mozilla"
I guess it is DirectX: style="filter:progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.AlphaImageLoader(etc)" You could probably make Proxomitron translate png img tags to use it.
I use Avant Browser, but it is another IE wraparound. However it uses MDI like Opera. I think it's faster than Opera (AND FREE!) Try it, you might like it!
I have tried some browsers with a MDI but I found it really annoying. IE's new windows are a lot more convenient.
>but with Opera you can't look for dixie chicks naked cover!
I just did it with Opera 7.10 and win 2k and no problem... all the naked chicks results on opera where there with no crash at all, here is the link in case you want to see these chicks:
LINK :P
I use opera and liked the mouse gestures a lot, made browsing really fast. The ability to easily disable showing images on a page is handy when a page is very slow. For the popup I use AKiller, so really don't mind opera/IE popups. Also installed uses between 4-7 Megas... compared to IE5.5 that are 75Mb or so to download, and IE6... even worse (not talking of the 450 kilos setup/installer that is a joke also to have a program installed that way)
But since opera7.xx the change was awesome... it's really fast in start displaying the pages. Just compare it with IE and you will be surprised. Opera start showing the text almost instantly while IE many times stays showing a white page for a long time until it loads all the images and then shows the entire page... text and images, while with opera you had time to read all the text in the mean while.
But just as there are different litestep themes... you should try and use the browser that best fulfill your needs.
Humm, I'm trying Phoenix. Crazy Browser had much more nice features, but Phoenix had a better rendering engine, so I definitively switch to it.
Mozilla/Firebird/Phoenix are all the same browser. Mozilla use to be Firebird/Phoenix.
Firebird is superior ;)
I'm a huge fan, now!
Mozilla is not Firebird, but Firebird will become the official Mozilla Browser after 1.4 final. Currently the Mozilla Suite is Seamonkey. Both use Gecko to do html rendering.
Firebird gets my vote. I ran IE for the duration of my know life, changed to phoenix late last year, tried mozilla last week and came crawling back to phoenix. I just love it.
Tried Firebird and I have to say that it has all of the features I loved about opera and much more (via extensions... which are much like modules on LS or plugins on MirandaIM (my favorite IM program)... The engine is great, you can have mouse gestures ("all in one gestures" extension), customized search i.e type "g litestep" and search for LS on google, "m hulk" and search imdb for hulk, and whatever search engine you want to add. You can also have tab browsing (which I don't use), and a great popup incorporated blocker. It's a lot more customizable than Opera. You can change some 'deep' settings via some text file editting (user.js, and other) that is familiar to all us "LS fans" here ;)... and much more.
Here is a little page on 'why to change to mozilla'.
Has some little bugs (that are worked on on the nightly builds), but even Opera had bugs which they haven't fixed since Opera6.0 (I reported them about 10 times) and BTW Firebird don't have the annoying Opera bugs.
And besides all this it's GNU! and when switching to Linux you can continue using Firebird ;) So definatelly I'm telling Opera good bye, and my vote goes to......
"
Mozilla Firebird"
