LiteStep.exe crashing on Win2K? Thread last updated on 2003-05-10 03:21:51

Hi all

I'll keep this to the point, and any ideas are appreciated.

I use Win2kPro (SP3), Chinese version, with latest nVidia detonator drivers. And litestep.exe crashes whenever I try to load it. I've tried both the Indie stable build and the LS installer.

After some tinkering, I found that:

(1) With a proper step.rc, LiteStep always crashes.

(2) Without a step.rc or with a fake (empty) one, LiteStep gives the proper warnings and exits normally.

So I narrowed down the problem and my guess is that one or more of the modules are causing the crash. Here's the problem: which one is it?

I experimented by commenting out loadmodule commands, but the result seems to be that the very action of loading any module causes LS to crash.

If anyone could please point out any commonly used modules that clash with 2k, suggest how I can go about getting LS to work, or just pointing me to more info, it would be much appreciated.

PS: before the well known 2k systray problem was fixed, I did get LS to work before. It's been a long time since then, and my 2k is installed from the same CD as I used back then. Only difference in the OS would be hardware, drivers, and the service packs and critical updates from MS.

It's hard to diagnose. I'm running Win2K without problem, but I have no SP3 nor than hotfixes. Humm, hotfixes... many time too hot...
Seriously... post the list of the modules you load and we'll try to see.
I've also noticed that the lastest nVidia driver (43.45 if I'm right) produce some flickering on my system when I load heavy appz; but no LS crash. You could try to switch back to the 41.82 (am I still right ?)...
If this doesn't work... humm, I guess you can't uninstall the hotfixes...

dunno about win2k exactly but you can uninstall hotfixes in xp like any other program via the add/remove programs dialog. check if 2k let's you do that too ;)

I don't think it's got anything to do with nvidia drivers, SP's or hotfixes. It's the Chinese version... it just don't work :(

I got a complete clean install of Win2k Chinese and it does the exact same thing. Even on my English version of Win XP, if I set the default non-unicode char set to Chinese, Litestep runs really unstably.

So far, I haven't figured out a workaround.

I wonder if Korean, Japanese etc. versions of Win2k do this as well.

I'm hoping there's some Chinese people among the official guys or Indiestep guys willing to address this.
