file manager in 2k bogus with ls Thread last updated on 2003-04-30 06:17:12

I'm starting to realize that the general forum is getting really long here.. I'm trying to figure out why the file manager acts diffrently when using litestep - When I create a new anything (directory, txt file, zip archive) from the file manager, the new file/dir doesn't automatically highlight itself for naming like it does with explorer as the shell. file manager seems much slower to respond as well. all the threads that come close to this issue seem to address a kind of shootout btwn explorer and ls, but that's not what I'm experiencing. ls does and always has run happily without any conflict from explorer, its just how the file manager acts. volume control doesn't show in the systray either, using systray2 rev1.89. anybody know what I gotta do to fix these little annoyances?

I suppose you are on win2k with service pack 3 or XP with sp1. I *think* its either the service pack or some other fix from windows update. The same thing happens over here, and it definitely didn't do that a few months ago.

same problem here - I just figured my crappy work e-pc was to blame. if anyone knows which hotfix(es) I need to remove to fix it, I would love to know.

Yep I had once that problem (the highlight thing, not sure about the volume icon since I don't use it) and corrected it by not installing one item on the Windows Update (using Winds 2000):

Hope this helps, 'cos it pissed me off when I didn't knew what was going wrong... The funny is that this item is suppossed to increase compatibility, but what it really does it's messes every thing.

Best regards,
Mguel

PS: Edited: "installing one item on win2000 SP3" for "installing one item on the Windows Update" since the problem didn't happen if I installed only SP3... it appeared when doing the windows update.

unfortunately, is says it can't be installed. so that (probably) explains what happened, but not how to fix it. :(

that should be it.. installation history shows that update on my comp here, but its not listed in add/remove programs. any ideas how to uninstall? I'm really tired of formatting :\ the files included with that fix are listed at [http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=810649], which gives us an idea of what files we need to replace. just dont know where to find older versions of them.

I recovered a previous backup, so didn't look so hard for a way to uninstal it... don't know how could it be done.
