okay, all of this is waaaay above my head.
first off, what is a module?
secondly, do I need one?
thirdly, where can I get one?
(laymen's terms appreciated)

1) Anything displayed in LS comes via a module
2) Yes

Modules extend what Litestep can do. And since LS can do very little on its own, you need modules. The popup menu, taskbar, system tray, and even the desktop are all modules in LS. Modules are typically included in themes. If you want to get your own, check out loose-screws.com.

Everytheme comes with modules in them (unless the author is a moron). When you download a theme it should be ready to go, except for maybe a few changes so it matches your computer. Don't worry about modules, just download and have fun.

Bah, if it only uses core modules it won't need to include any, and if it uses NetLoadModule, it'll only need to include one.
