LiteStep.net Site Suggestions Thread last updated on 2003-01-30 23:08:53

Well i have soem suggestions, as im sure some others do, so i figured id get this going.

#1) I dont like having to sign up just to view themes and screenshots.
#2) I dont like having to actually log in just to view them.
#3) I think there should be a screenshot tab rather than having to go through the profiles link, to find another link to the screenshots.
#4) I dont like how there are not obvious links to upload ss/themes.

I dunno these are all things i have seen other talking about as well. Just my 2 cents.

#5) Oh yeah, and how every time you come to the site you have to log in, you cant just set an option for it to remember you or something

Posted by member 432 on 2003-01-27 08:08:04 link

Site should set a cookie on user's machines... way easier...

Another suggestion:
For bandwidth's sake, allow external linking.
For instance: I uploaded a them today, but I actually had to upload the file. I still host it on my personal site, and in the sites tables you could add a field "link" or create another table with as many urls as needed that provide the files.

table theme: id, title, description
table links: id, id_theme url_theme

So you could have as many mirrors and relieve LS.net's bandwidth!

1 & 2) Required be host...sorry...not gonna change.
3) You will also notice how this site handles screenshots differently than the old site. Screenshots revolve around profiles, so they are in the correct spot.
4) How would you suggest to make them more obvious?
5) Something else required by the host in one way and me in another.
6) I will not have any bw problems as we did in the past. We have slightly changed hosts since the last incarnation of LSnet and I have been told we will not have this problem. They know our usage and know what we can do. So mirrors at this time are in the back of my mind, behind finishing the site up.

[morph] With the way we worked security there would not be away to allow for persistant logins. If you look at your LSnet cookie you will notice it doesn't contain any userdata, just a hash. Good luck ever attempting to hack the site through cookie :) So, we sacrifice a little (very little) ease of use, to make the overall experiance here better..

Posted by member 7 on 2003-01-27 13:25:06 link

The sacrifice isn't "very little" imo... after all it was already bugging me 45 minutes after ls.net went up last night (as dev can tell =)). Just my two cents - yes, I did read the posts above.

Posted by member 186 on 2003-01-27 15:53:40 link

yes, the constant logging-in is annoying. but i guess getting all the bandwidth you need is a fair tradeoff for living with these security rules.

Posted by member 365 on 2003-01-27 16:46:20 link

a real sugestion would be:
Group threads in topics i.e.: LS.net ; Themes ; Other....
add links to User Web pages, like Ls.net has to Aim or Msn, there should be one for web sites....
Can't think of anything else, cause this """rock's satans soul off""", very well built...
P.S.: the constant login isn't a problem if you are to get "unlimited" bandwith...^_^

Posted by member 2 on 2003-01-27 17:16:20 link

A lot of the "constant login" problem should be fixed. There was a small problem with the redirects that was forcing a new login.. That should no longer be a problem. The only logins that should be required now is if you are inactive for over 15 minutes

this isnt a bashing post just so you dont think it is it is a serious question.
Why does your host require your users to log in to your site?
To me that just seem strange.
I my self want 100% of my site controled by me or my other chosen admins.

O and a little of topic but dang it you guys need case badges in your little store :p
Im already gona buy a coffee cup and coster :)

Posted by member 910 on 2003-01-27 21:41:15 link

lol 100% control of your site? when you ever find that happening while being hosted by someone else, let me know. i'm putting the wings on the pigs right now.

Posted by member 1 on 2003-01-27 22:04:21 link

nova: When you are given free hosting with unlimited space and bandwidth you tend do bend to the few things they ask. But we are in control of the site 99%, actually we have more control than you do at your host, I just need to follow some small requests. No biggy.

As for the badges..."We don't need no stinking badges!" Actually they aren't offered by CafePress. And since you brought it up, I know ppl assume that we make money. We don't! Everything is listed at CafePress cost, if you doubt me check for yourself.

Like theproblem I would really like threads grouped. Maybe this way of working isn't a problem know but with a lot of threads it could become pretty time consuming to find what you want/need. Otherwise everything is fine for me.

Posted by member 1 on 2003-01-28 14:51:46 link

You can group threads. At the top you can select which Forums classification you want. By Default it is set to all.

Posted by member 365 on 2003-01-28 16:04:40 link

I noticed that When I started the "Most whanted" thread, but what I meant was grouping in more catgories then the ones already present...
I know that now you guys don't have to worry about that much, but soon it can be a real assle to navigate the forums...

Just a question: what's the deal with email addresses? Why does this site (and others) translate the "@" symbol into " at "? I know there must be a good reason for it, but I can't figure it out.

Posted by member 1 on 2003-01-28 18:14:50 link

it keeps the spammers from parsing our pages and snagging email addresses. With the amount of users we have here, and how easy it is to get the address, we did you a favor and made them work.

Posted by member 24 on 2003-01-28 21:39:11 link

not to mention the spam robots would have to get a login, then activate it, then login, then grep the site.

Nice looking site. Would like to see less reliance on tables but that's just my personal issue. Everything seems to be very well thought out from what I can see, very purposeful. Over all I like it. I would suggest putting the links in two column format as there appears to be room.

Posted by member 966 on 2003-01-29 00:23:18 link

On the browsing the Theme screenshots... Could you put the Theme names on them???

Posted by member 1 on 2003-01-29 00:26:52 link

Themes are now setup the same way Screenshots are. If you mouse over them you get author and theme name.

Posted by member 966 on 2003-01-29 04:41:34 link

wow, if I wasn't so stupid I woulda seen that... Gotta quit smoking this stuff... ;)

Posted by member 376 on 2003-01-29 07:13:52 link

Another idea:
In the forum, it would also be nice to see who made the last post in the thread view, makes it easier to see when someone has replied (no, I don't do internet time =) )

Posted by member 424 on 2003-01-29 08:47:49 link

nhavar:: the "room" is being reserved for a purpose :-p

Posted by member 1428 on 2003-01-29 12:23:55 link

Using Mozilla here I can just keep the password in the manager and it automatically puts it in for me. So no worries here. Great job by the way.

Posted by member 426 on 2003-01-29 13:08:25 link

a changes since your last visit would be a nice touch, would keep me from coming and checking the themes every 2 hours :)

Posted by member 2 on 2003-01-29 14:24:54 link

jrvw2: Couple people have suggested this and it's something we are looking in to, right now we are concentrating on bugs and also some cosmetic fixes. It's amazing, you can fix bugs for the last 2 months, but no matter what, come opening day... *WHAMMOOO* 20 new bugs... Oh well..

Posted by member 210 on 2003-01-30 16:09:09 link

sorry, been gone a while cuz ive been moving. As far as making the links a tad more visible, id suggest the upload theme link at the very top of the theme page, when i just glanced over the page it appeared to be more of a title to seperate two sections, didnt really notice it until i read the full page.

Latest Additions :: Upload theme :: Browse list

kinda a suggestion. No real biggie to me cuz now i know where it is.

Posted by member 915 on 2003-01-30 16:26:38 link

About the tool tip with the theme's name and author ? Could it also be in the status bar, I am a tad impatient when it comes to waiting for the tooltip to come up :)

Posted by member 1 on 2003-01-30 20:01:50 link

Gamflin: you could switch back to the classic description view. :)

Posted by member 1562 on 2003-01-30 23:07:28 link

to help reduce the size of your png screenshots, if you're not going to switch to jpeg, you can use png crush, which I think is on sourceforge, but google can find you a link. It's a command-line program that further reduces the size of png-24/32 files. I've found that it doesn't really compress png-8 files created in fireworks or imageready/photoshop much. I think it's also available for linux.

Devilboi : I could, I think I would rather email the Feds to see if they are finally done with the themes.org servers .. that way i can have the actual classic ls.net site it self :-D
