I used many of the alternative file managers out there, and I found
2xExplorer to be the best.

2xplorer is pretty bulky... I like mine to be small. Anyone know if an extremely minimal file manager? Ill check out these ones...

2xExplorer is too bulky? In what sense do you mean LostLogic?
The total installation of 2xExplorer is ~780Kb
I yet to see a file manager that does what 2xExplorer can do
packed in a smaller file size.

I agree.. 2xExplorer is very lightweight for what it does. It is also my favorite one by far. It doesn't everything the heavier managers do ( except FTP, but I like Filezilla for that anyways), but it is tiny compared to the others.

FAR is the best!

bishop: WinRAR is a compression tool, not a file manager.

Thanks guys.

I also was looking for a replacement file manager. Ttied out the 3D explorer Triddcom, an amazing piece of software, but not really handy. Unzipped 2xplorer, and realized this is what I was looking for.

Before I installed also filemaster. Not bad but not really my thing.

moshi, I'm talking about FAR Manager, not WinRAR. It's file manager, written by the same company: http://www.rarlab.com/far_manager.htm

Bishop, are you actually telling me that you do your daily file management
on a TEXT BASED file manager?
That's insane....

phenix0000, absolutely right! console mode rules, besides FAR works much faster than GUI-based file managers, it has internal archives support (ZIP, RAR, etc), a lot of plugins for various tasks. Using hotkeys I'm flying over the directiries and files. Wanna screenshots of my desktop? ;-)

i want screenshots(fights a screenshot addiction) im trying!!!!

For small and powerful...the ultimate is ZtreeWIN....;)

If you're willing to pay for power, there's just no beating Directory Opus. http://www.gpsoft.com.au (has screenshots). Of all the GUI file managers, it'd be a fair bet that this is the oldest one still around and in active development. (If I'm wrong please ignore that).
I've been using it since version 4.0, and I've never seen anything more flexible and powerful. Support for FTP, FXP, image viewer and regex searches... plus a ton of other features and even a complete Explorer replacement mode. At least take a look at it.

A note for the code monkeys out there: Directory Opus v4.12 source code was released under the GPL!

Oh! right file managers...
Dfileman is what i use, its very small and has some cool options
Its rather old though, I dont even think you can DL it from the offical page.

by bulky I meant in features. Im one of those people who like as little features as possible in an application that lets me get around my OS. You know. a simple back/forward button. delete/copy/paste by mouse. and thats about all id want in it. no flashy logos... 346346 features and buttons. I love simplicity :)

ZtreeWIN....a 32 bit rendition of the old Dos XTGold....same keystrokes...no Dos memory limit [naturally]...Works in 9x to XP no problem...;)
