sounds to me that the community has spoken.

Posted by member 378340 on 2008-05-26 18:35:31 link

what, you don't like my categories?
i think they would be a good addition, since the general thread is about twice the size of the next biggest.

Not saying that...trying to stay out of this one and leave it up to the community.

oh.
DeViLbOi, you are the community :)

rofl...I just got a bunch of programmers together 6 years ago.

Posted by member 378340 on 2008-05-26 19:46:44 link

and started litestep.net?
or started programing litestep?

Posted by member 1 on 2008-05-26 20:33:35 link

I inherited LSnet kinda. Someone owns the site...and set someone up with LS interests to manage it for him...and in turn...I work for that person. We really need a PHP dev though if you have the skills.

Posted by member 378340 on 2008-05-26 20:58:04 link

so you don't actually own the site?
who pays for it, and who is this person you work for?
i know basic html, but that is about my limit. i could try and learn php over the summer though :)

didn't you used to be the coder?

Posted by member 378340 on 2008-05-26 21:24:40 link

why are you never on #litestep?
or are you, just under a different name?

Posted by member 1 on 2008-05-26 21:33:32 link

nope...I just keep people in line. I work for people that wish to remain nameless. :P We have tried to let people learn php in the past and it has not gone well. So if you want to learn it and prove that you have the advanced skills we need we can revisit it then. I did some basic php programming when I wrote the manual back in the day. I did not code any of LSnet.

I am never on IRC because I got tired of those that frequented it. Those that I was close to moved on and as such so did I.

Posted by member 378340 on 2008-05-26 23:02:34 link

how long have you been with LiteStep?
and you work for anonymous people?
and i though you coded ALL of ls.net...
are those people still there to fix bugs?
or is that why you need a php programmer?
i could try, but at present i know exactly... NOTHING :P

Posted by member 1 on 2008-05-27 07:42:35 link

1) I want to say that I had started with b21 and had it for like a week before upgrading to b22. So I have used LS a loooong time.

2) Anonymous to you....yes

3) I coded none of LSnet. It was coded by two individuals that have since moved on for the most part. If a major bug is found I can call on them if I need to.

Posted by member 378340 on 2008-05-27 20:57:27 link

"major"?
define a "Major" bug :)
did the search function for forums EVER work?
or was it just a planned feature that never got implemented?
was one of the coders tuxpow3r?
and didn't you know SOME php?
[quote]When I wrote the docs I taught myself PHP in a month.[/qoute]
amazing how much the topic has changed :)

Posted by member 1 on 2008-05-27 21:57:09 link

Major = Some portion of the site not working at all.

The search function never worked when searching every category. Works just fine on a single category. When you searched every category the CPU spiked on the server to 100% and stayed there for like 15 minutes. The search is properly written, just too much data to go through. We thought we had a fix in a later version of MySQL but it didn't help.

Tres`ni and tux did a lot of work on the site. Both are really great guys, personal lives just got in the way. As for me, I know enough PHP to get me through what I need to do. I however can not translate the site so I don't touch it in fear of breaking it.

Posted by member 378340 on 2008-05-27 22:17:06 link

yeah. couldn't you just copy of the pages into another folder, and mess around with it there?

as for the search function, why does searching a single category only take a couple seconds, but searching all takes 15 minutes? that seams like it must be an exaggeration :)

i think (if possible) you should copy all the required files to a folder on the server and try to point the docs tab to the wiki without risking breaking the site. you could probably even load the wiki within this page, but i have no idea how :)

i'm thinking of writing some new text for the front page. if i do, will you know how to replace it?

and the community still has nothing to say...

Posted by member 1 on 2008-05-28 08:03:09 link

LSnet does not and will not link to external sites and include it as part of the site. The wiki is available in the links section for those that want to use it. For over a year now the docs tab has been written off to be replaced. Just need to find someone to put the time in to replace it.

The search function problem doesn't make any sense to us either. It really does lockup the CPU for 15 minutes and we have no explanation for it.

I do have the ability to replace the two paragraphs on the front page if someone writes something up. Because of how the site was designed it can't change format, must be two split paragraphs, but I can change that.

Posted by member 378340 on 2008-05-28 19:15:52 link

k, i'll see what i can do about the front page, it might take me couple weeks as i've been really busy lately :)

and for the docs tab, could you just use the same design as the links section and just link to the various available docs. they are already in the links section, but the n00bs won't look there. i'd know, i didn't until a couple weeks ago :) and there's always the people who post flames about the LS community. the recent one didn't look in the docs section ;).

and could the front page be more than 2 split paragraphs? is that easy to change?

Posted by member 1 on 2008-05-28 19:22:30 link

I would have to rewrite the front page to do that. I would like to keep it as 2 split sections as I really don't want to add more screenshots to the front page. I have enough problems with the way it is working now...don't need to add another headache onto it.

Posted by member 378340 on 2008-05-28 20:08:32 link

lol
yeah, 2 panes is fine. i'm just thinking on sticking some info about LS and links to pages about it, like the wiki. this would allow people to know what litestep is almost immediately after entering the site (without even logging in).

Posted by member 1 on 2008-05-28 21:28:18 link

No links to external sites. If you want to give them an idea of what it is like then you need to describe it there.

Posted by member 378340 on 2008-05-28 21:37:38 link

not even the wiki?

Posted by member 1 on 2008-05-28 22:01:14 link

LSnet is a self-contained site. We are dedicated to bringing the best information to the LS Community. We don't provide content from anyone else. That includes the definition of what LS is.

Posted by member 378340 on 2008-05-28 22:09:16 link

isn't the links section in violation of that?

Posted by member 1 on 2008-05-28 22:48:01 link

Nope...the concept is to bring people in and be there one stop source for everything. By providing a link to the wiki on the front page you are actually sending users away. They have no reason to return really after that point. The links section provides links to community features that we don't necessarily provide. For example...links to other theme sites may be in links but you would never find it on the themes page.

Posted by member 378340 on 2008-05-28 22:54:17 link

i still think there should be links to the wiki and other docs on the docs tab, since there is nothing useful there :)

Posted by member 1 on 2008-05-29 07:43:50 link

And as I said before...the docs tab is going away.

Posted by member 378340 on 2008-05-29 18:30:01 link

what are you replacing it with?
you said the design requires there to be 8 tabs.

Posted by member 1 on 2008-05-29 18:48:36 link

The plan was to put Theme Reviews there...but nobody seems to want to review anything so Im not going to waste the time on having someone program it. Someone came up with an idea for the tab and they are working on it now.

Posted by member 378340 on 2008-05-29 18:54:58 link

i guess i won't ask you to spoil the surprise :)
it'll be nice to finally see the tab go to some use though.
