Major Problem: Can't do much after install. Thread last updated on 2008-04-28 22:36:17

Hi!
I found out of LiteStep today, downloaded the "Omar" installation from this site, installed it followed by a reboot.
Well after logging into my account everything looked perfect except: I couldn't click any icons at all. I could enter the Start Menu but not start any programs. The right and left mouse buttons did work but only to bring up the mouse menues.
I could not enter "My Controls" telling me that the object couldn't be found or I might not have proper rights to access it.
What went wrong?
Lucky me I got another computer so I searched this forum for clues about what to do. ctrl+adl+del and new task finding the "Use explorer shell" function was my rescue.
I uninstalled LiteStep, created a new Admin account as I didn't want to risk anything more. Installed LiteStep on the new account but the same thing happens. Some system tasks are working such as Shutdown and switch user, but logoff etc doesn't.

Additionally LiteStep didn't seem to autostart anything such as my firewall, keyboard G-15 etc.

I really want this tweak to work properly as I think it's a clean and hitech lookalike interface and also it seems easier to work with.

Appreciates any help!

Please apply the "Litestep-Updater" found in the downloads section.

Hi again,

tried the updater but no luck. Only thing I experienced positive was that the account was loaded much faster than before. Besides that, same scenarios when trying to do anything within LiteStep.

When LiteStep launches you should have no Start Menu. And I have also never heard of "My Controls". What is that?

Well there is a start menu but in yellow dots.. Works as the Start menu. My apologizes, I meant 'control panel' of course, my bad!

What happens if you attempt to launch an application on the right click menu from your desktop?

Nothing happens, except some of the system tasks.

Is the computer part of a domain? Has it been configured using Policies? What other custom changes to the system have been done? Any non-standard background services running?

Do you mean I need to install a fresh WinXP to get LiteStep to work?

No you don't...but what you are experiencing is unique and jugg is looking for what could be causing your issue. What makes your computer special.

I see! Well my computer are not part of a domain right now. If you mean config by policies as my DVD etc auto starts, then it is configured using policies. Can't think of any custom changes made to the OS, I have never tried to "spice" it up in any way before now. Don't know what would be non-standard services but I guess my keyboard service would perhaps be that kind of thing (Logitech G15). Maybe I should try switch to another keyboard and see if there is any difference?

Your keyboard wouldn't have a service specific for it, just a driver that may appear in the tray. I think jugg is looking for something along the lines of some of the Stardock apps that like to take over the PC. System policies are applied in a domain, so you don't have those either. I am kind of wondering if you have some sort of spyware or malware running that depends on explorer being loaded.

That'd be my guess at this point as well... that or user error.

I have the exact same problem, I think. After install and reboot, the UI will freeze up, and I can not interact with it in any way except from the task manager. Installed the update as well.
My XP SP2 install is 5 days old, and on startup I am running ITE Smartguardian, DU Meter, Cubase SX license center app, Daemontools.

x2 3800
Radeon 3870 latest drivers.

Try the LOSI installer. (why isn't it in downloads yet?)

also, you will have to be a little more specific. what theme are you using (i assume the default, austry). what happens when you click on the "start menu"(actually called popup in LS, i think). do you have a "desktop", do you have desktop icons, what features in specific work? what don't? "some of the system tasks..." is not very specific. what if you open "My Computer", and try to run a program from there (in the program files directory is a good place to look). if you can't open My computer, open taskmgr with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, and attempt to run them from there (File, Run). then, report your findings and i will do my best to help you.

Best of luck,

Also, if ANYTHING happens, like an error when you attempt to open a program, include that.

LOSI is not in the Downloads section yet because...

1) Nobody has uploaded it
2) It is still considered to be unstable by those that have used it. (*shrug* I'm not one of them.)
