Hello guys or gals, inclusive! I'm new around here, but you may have seen my bitch-posts. Anyway, I'm looking for a replacement for the windows open-file dialog. There are a few different kinds of open file, including "show only folders", "show shortcut buttons on the side", and the rarely seen "folders and files, with checkboxes". I'm interested in replacing the "show shortcut buttons". I'd really like to set them to something else.

Here is the "open file" dialog in Firefox,Opera, and IE.

Yup, they're all the same! Can I replace this crappy dialog, or at least customize the shortcuts on the left side?

Update: Can I get it to look anything like this?

That is a windows dialog and you cant change it without altering the .dll that it runs from.

Altering dialogs and windows' in windows isnt that hard though.

Get a program called ResHacker :http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/

With this you can change a rediculous amount of things in windows.

A good site with alot of examples and howto's is :http://wint.virtualplastic.net/

No one serious about customizing windows should be without this.

Just customise all the dialogs with that ;)

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\comdlg32\Placesbar]

Go to that key with regedit to change the shortcuts.
