OpenGL or DX9, could it be used in LS? Thread last updated on 2003-04-08 15:29:32

I know close to nothing about writing a proggie in C++ or anything, but i wonder if anyone has ever attempted at making an OpenGL accelerated, or even DirectX (shudderes), Shell Replacement for Windows. Imagine all the sweet things that could be done, and with computers becoming as high powered as they are, couldn't it be done? Even better; Imagine LiteSteps future if it went 3D.

Just a thought.

nivenh, I believe (shoot me if Im wrong), worked on a 3D shell for a bit. It was a bit strange in use, but it worked. Dunno if it used any accelerated engine though.

Last time i talked to him he said even the current hardware couldn't run it smoothly enough to be actually useable.

Realistically, shells don't need accelerated graphics. I imagine that trying to get OpenGL or DX to cooperate with normal applications would be more trouble than it's worth. Of course, it would make a neat experiment.
