i am trying to configure litestep on an windows ME computer i found in my closet. I've got it working, it is set to the default theme. my question is, is it going to be overly difficult to install more complicated themes and modules because it is windows 9x? should i give up? the computer i am using is not connected to the internet either so it makes it difficult, i keep having use a friends computer or the library to save shit to my flash drive. should i just give up on litestep? i plan on probably eventually replacing the OS anyway....

WinME does limit you on the more complicated themes in that it doesn't support transparency. Many themes now use transparency for some eye-candy so that may be a problem as most themers don't think of 9x machines being in existance. Personally I think WinME is crap anyway, hence it being part of Windows CEMENT. SOME machines that came with WinME can be upgraded to XP, but you will probably be better off with finding a copy of 2K that is laying around somewhere.

The not being connected to the net thing will be a bigger problem until you find a theme you want to use. OTS2 themes depend on the Internet connection being there as most of the people of the world have broadband. I'm not saying it is a requirement to be constantly on the net, but you will need to get there from time to time for module downloads and the like.

is there a specific LS theme that works well with 9x that at the same time is functional and looks good?

Well... I suppose I could suggest this old theme of mine [converted to OS2 by sega]. It was made on XP but during a time when most modules still supported 9x -- AFAIK it should run on ME. I think you might have more luck with old themes like this.

And oh: if you're on an old system with no net connection, perhaps you should try some old LiteStep distro like, uh, LSDistro or LSD4P. Themes for those standards included modules. You'd have an ancient LS setup but I think it should work. Even back then LS was a helluva lot better than Explorer :)

Honostly totaly give up. Just get out a 3030 or M16 (on burst) and ventilate the rig. Nah I have a collection of old PCs running various Distros of Linux. My nephew (he is 11) even managed to install a older distro on his old ME box (got a new pc for christmas). I wish I could get a pretty GUI for my Atari programmer 600 or comodore 64k and 128k. I can dream can't I?
