Windows Update making svchost run at 100% CPU Thread last updated on 2007-01-10 05:03:48

Hi, I've been using Litestep for about four years, switching back and forth between it and explorer. Starting yesterdag, a problem emerged.

When Windows update had a new update to install, and I was running Litestep, usually the icon would just sit there in the systray, until I clicked it, and the Windows Update wizard would load.
But yesterday, I started noticing a serious performance loss on my system. Svchost was at 100% CPU performance, and after a little digging with process explorer, it became clear to me that Windows Update was the problem. It kept on starting up, running for about a minute (svchost at 100%), then it would stop running (svchost CPU value dropped) for about five seconds, and then the process would start all over again.

I'm running Litestep 24.7 RC 4, with the Insight v3.1 theme by Ashtefere, using these modules:
jdesk-0.73.dll
xlabel-3.4.9.dll
xtaskbar-1.4.1.dll
contextmenu-1.0.dll
xtray-1.0.dll
xpopup-1.1.9.dll
gandharva-0.50.0.4.dll
ckvwm-1.40.dll
rainmeter-0.8.dll

My windows update set to "notify but don't install"

My question is, is this a know problem? And what can I do about it? I'm temporary on manual updating, but that's not really what I want of course ;)

Thanks in advance, guys :)

Edit: Just adding, in when running Explorer, there is no problem!

It's a known problem; why you just started having it yesterday is beyond me though. Most of us have been having it for quite a while now (search for similar posts in these forums!). I just run windows update when I see this happening; consider it a "reminder" that there's yet another security hole that needs to be patched. ;)

I even think that it is in a few stickies...but nobody reads those. I wonder why I bother.

Aha, I see now. Thanks guys!

Devilboi, you were right! I had been cruising posts in the forum all afternoon, and I seemed to have overlooked the last post in the "LS Frequently Asked Question / Knowledge Base" post.
I still find it strange that this problem never appeared before yesterday. Like I said, the windows update icon would just sit there in the systray, until I clicked it.
