comments, suggestions, and criticisms about ls.net

Posted by member 182 on 2003-01-27 07:36:53 link

duh i'm an idiot. i thought i was making an area :P

Well, i'd just like to say WO0T about the site being up, but WTF to the enforced logins. No other site i've seen makes people sign up just to see (let alone download) themes, and most other sites put screenshot links in a prominent area, not say .. in people's user profile.

Also on the topic of screenshots, i don't know what you guys were thinking, but it downloads the whole damn picture for me here and not a thumbnail. Might've just been on the 3 themes uploaded but damn .. i'm not made of bandwidth you know.

Posted by member 31 on 2003-01-27 08:44:33 link

I noticed the large download for certain thumbnails as well. We'll definetly look into that.

As far as the required login... That's how it is, sorry if you don't like it.

Posted by member 1 on 2003-01-27 10:14:52 link

required login came as a requirement to me from the host. So sorry...not changing anytime soon.

Large theme thumbs should be fixed.. Will fix the old thumbs when I get home from school :)

Posted by member 1 on 2003-01-27 11:08:33 link

Thumbnails fixed. No more 3M thumbs. :p

how about makeing it so we can hide our email address i dont like having my email visable to every person who comes here.

Posted by member 449 on 2003-01-27 11:14:39 link

you may want to fix it so you dont need to log back in after a post to few little bugs and isues to work out but looks good so far

Posted by member 1 on 2003-01-27 11:22:06 link

Email addresses have always been displayed publicly on LSnet sites. We have masked the addresses to reduce spam and spiders. However if this is an issue for many I will look into a viable solution that everyone can agree on.

As for the logging out. There is a timeout on the site of 15 idle minutes. This helps in security for us, and meets a requirement of our host. Does anyone else find 15 minutes unreasonable?

Posted by member 99 on 2003-01-27 12:46:14 link

Is it possible to have the login return you to exactly the page you were on when you logged in? Sometimes I'll leave a page open for a while, then want to click on something, but if I have to log in again, I have to find where I was first...

Posted by member 449 on 2003-01-27 14:19:16 link

its logged me out instantly a few time so far

Posted by member 24 on 2003-01-27 16:00:01 link

I'd much rather an hour idle time =P I can't be going to the site every 15 mins to check things, but within an hour or so, I will most times come back to see whats changed. Heck, I check slashdot about 8-10 times a day =P

Posted by member 182 on 2003-01-27 18:02:16 link

You guys rock, thanks for fixing clearing up all the little issues so quick :)

One question though: Why can i seen my login/pass in the ie6 status bar after clicking [Login] ?

Posted by member 820 on 2003-01-27 18:30:32 link

Well first off, good job getting ls.net back up. Booya.

Now I think the forced logins is a good idea, all the other gripes are just issues, except I do think having a screenshot database is a good idea. What if your a really keen guy like morph, and you want to show people updates to [noir] and urbantech2 at the same time?

Posted by member 2 on 2003-01-27 19:03:31 link

Fixed the login/pass stuff mentioned by psynapse (go Tux!)

lp: You can have 2 screenshots at any given time. So...

Posted by member 26 on 2003-01-27 21:19:36 link

I must say, I probably wouldn't have bothered signing up if I wasn't able to get this nickname when I signed up nice and early yesterday.

Posted by member 1 on 2003-01-27 22:27:36 link

psynapse: I have no idea why it is down there, we sure as heck don't put it there though.

Posted by member 1270 on 2003-01-28 12:37:21 link

Forced Logon= Good, Screenshot Database=Bad Site in general=Good. Enough said.

Posted by member 1 on 2003-01-28 14:50:38 link

Jeckal: Things like Good and Bad don't help get things fixed. What do you not like about the Screenshot Database?

Posted by member 1270 on 2003-01-28 18:41:38 link

My main problem with the current screenshot database is size. I know most are on high bandwidth connections but there are still some that are dial up. The thumbnails load up fast now but most of the screenshots are 500k+, some are even 2mb. I myself don't mind, but the main concern would be with dial up users. Another function that would be nice to be added to the screenshot database would be top rated desktops by views. To show off the more talented creators. Anyways, I felt I had to rant someone someway early on. Everything else is perfect, good to have it back!

uhhm when I login and then goto the themes section I sometimes have to login again, and then i go to the news section and i have to login again.
Other than that wicked cool site.

Posted by member 1502 on 2003-01-28 20:35:49 link

i think this website should be more custimable like the previous version of ls.net. Like the browsing capabilities should be suited to each person prefrence, the color-schemes should be theme-based, and why not go ahead and add a auto-logon script.

Posted by member 1502 on 2003-01-28 21:03:31 link

i take that back about the auto-login because i just downloaded opera 7. but i am sure people with other browsers may want it

Posted by member 1 on 2003-01-28 21:32:34 link

Jeckal: we were looking into that earlier. I do not understand how 250K JPEG images convert to 1.5M PNG images. I don't find it acceptable and we will be looking into better solutions. As for the "Most Viewed" idea, not gonna happen. On the last LSnet we had that and it turned into a big pissing contest and people lost track of what it was all about.

catacalysmo: We fixed a problem with login yesterday. However, it appears that some users are still having problems. All of the users with this problem that I have spoken to have been using Proxy Servers or Cache engines from their host and it breaks a security feature in place. We are working to get around this, but it may take another day or so.

goodle: why don't you write a site on up that does all that? It took us a year to get this far, and yes all of that is possible here, but not now. Give us time to squash these bug reports first.

Posted by member 1502 on 2003-01-28 23:03:32 link

im fine with the websites current state. i was just posting somethings i wanted.

i dont know that much about java except that it is easy and simple/popular things like i requested are fairly easy to find for free. But since im not gonna do anything about it im just going to shut up and quit complaining/bitching/suggesting. :)

Posted by member 1 on 2003-01-28 23:41:46 link

I don't mind suggestions...its just hard to take the large tasks ones 2 days after opening.

Posted by member 221 on 2003-01-28 23:44:01 link

heheh, yeah making a photoish image a png will do that to you every time. I'd say jng but no body supports that yet.

Why are you using pngs any way? wouldn't jpeg be the prefered choice since many people you photoish images as backgrounds?

Posted by member 1 on 2003-01-28 23:50:16 link

Every test I did with images and PNG dropped file size in half or so. Now they double. We may end up doing the JPEG thing...I may just say skrew it and go to PSD. :p

"I do not understand how 250K JPEG images convert to 1.5M PNG images."

Please visit http://www.r1.dsl.pipex.com/img-formats/ to learn a bit about that. In short, 24-bit pngs are just not suitable for images containing gradients or photographs.

I'm sure Devilboi, Tres'ni and the other site wizards (sorceresses? ;) are a little stressed with the 'release.' there's no rush (not for me anyway! ;) the site's up, it's nice, it's usable, let's all relax. :)

I think the ls.net team needs a good rest too - keep up the good work guys. (gals? ;)

Posted by member 365 on 2003-01-29 08:57:06 link

ouch guys, this is one of the big one's.....

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: createnavbar() in /usr/apache/htdocs/lsnet/includes/forums/forums_list.inc on line 103

just got this while clicking "forums"...then recliked and all normal...but I'm sure it wasn't a "my computer bug"....

Posted by member 1 on 2003-01-29 10:01:17 link

theproblem: I am going to say that somebody may have been updating that file when you hit it. But I will look into it.

Posted by member 1 on 2003-01-29 10:26:49 link

yup...you hit it exactly as tuxpow3r was updating it. Sorry about that. :)

Posted by member 365 on 2003-01-29 16:04:05 link

no harm done, I clicked back and all normal...just glad it wasn't something more serious...^_^

Posted by member 1682 on 2003-01-29 17:19:51 link

In the 'Themes' tab...I managed to see my screenshot [Nijikon Fetchi 2]...a theme not as yet uploaded....and mouse-over said 'tenebrae - Maestr0'....guess this qualifies as a 'bug'...;)

Posted by member 915 on 2003-01-29 17:58:51 link

I know how things were going with the development, even though half of the team left because of rl and / or other issues...the site is here and I am happy, thanks team ! :)

Haven't encountered any bugs yet, but what about when things cool down, in the themes section perhaps have the name of the theme and author below or above the thumbnail. Waiting for the tool tip isn't fun when you aren't suppose to be browsing at work :)

Posted by member 1943 on 2003-01-29 18:12:07 link

I'm a new user. Just signed up. When I linked back from my email and tried to log in I got message that invalid activation code. But I tried to log in anyway and here I am. I assume I'm logged in.

Posted by member 915 on 2003-01-29 18:13:40 link

I have seen that as well, can't complain if it appears to be working :)
