Icon sets Thread last updated on 2006-09-20 15:54:23

I may be way over-thinking this, but…
I want to be able to have different sets of icons for different desktops. Using vwm (or some other module) I need to be able to have my icons that relate to work on one desktop, then icons for personal files on another desktop. I’ve searched the forums here, ls-universe, ls-themes and the mods list at shellfront and I’ve looked through a bunch of mod docs I already have. I’m relatively new to theme-ing and have made several tweaks to themes, but I’m not nearly at the level of most of you. Could someone point me in the direction of a module or some documentation that can do this (if it can!). I appreciate it.

I guess you could do it...can't say it would have been tried already. Basically when you think of a VWM think of a really big desktop. So if you have a 4 wide desktop you should in theory be able to place things outside of your screen resolution and see them on other VWM's. Now this would only be a theory of how to get this done based on old ways of doing things. It may not work with current VWM modules.

You could use a module like clickonic (best-supported desktop icon module at the moment), which supports multiple icons groups. Define groups like so:

*clickonic Desktop1
Desktop1Folder "Path to your desired desktop 1 icons goes here..."
*clickonic Desktop2
Desktop2Folder "Path to your desired desktop 2 icons goes here..."

etc., etc. ...

Then set up your vwm to run !clickonicShow and !clickonicHide commands when you switch desktops:

VWMOnSwitchTo !ClickonicShow Desktop^@dc^
VWMOnSwitchFrom !ClickonicHide Desktop^@dc^

Edit: Now that I think of it a bit, West did something like this with his "Tabby" theme, although he didn't use the VWMOnSwitchTo/From settings to do it. You might download that theme and look at what he did there, too.

Ah...that would be another good way of getting it done. More reliable than my method.

But if you had a multi-monitor setup and wanted separate icons on each, that'd probably be the way to do it. Not having multiple monitors on one PC, I can't test it though. ;)

Thanks guys. I'll try the Clickonic mod. Brian, I use your Penumbra and love it for the weather scripts!

Yeah, I have a slight case of overkill where the weather stuff is concerned. Now if we could make a module to *control* the weather, that would be nice. ;)
