Odd bug... Thread last updated on 2006-08-18 13:43:03

Hey guys, just switched back to one of my old old themes, 'intuition' and I've encountered an interesting bug...

When I bring up the task manager for some administratorial purpose, then close the TM, litestep crashes.

It doesn't do this when other apps close, just the windows task manager.

This was never a problem when I used the theme in w2K but now that I'm on XP it's developped this handicap.

Anyone know what this is all about and how to correct it? I'm guessing it may have something to do with the fact that the theme is from like 2003-2004 and uses really old modules.. Here's the list (in case anyone knows of any specific XP conflicts):

vapptrans-0.1
grdtransparent-1.0

jdesk-0.711
lsfonts-0.1

icondesk-0.55

ckhotspots-2.3 load ckhotspots.dll
lsxcommand-1.8.4
lsmail-4.3
taskbar3-0.306_alpha-3
label-1.99
rainmeter-0.9 load rainmeter.dll
ckvwm-1.40
jamptoo-1.4
systray2-lsbox
vtray-1.06 (the theme uses two system trays)
geekamp-1.9.7 threaded
razrez-0.4
stbang-1.0
xprop-1.27
lsbox-3.0-pre
mzscript-0.9_beta-11-jam3
popup2-2.1.4

I had odd crashes like this occur with a theme when I was trying to use rainmeter-0.9 (the last xlabel-hookable version, AFAIK). I don't know *why* it crashed, but if you look in the application event log you may see "Application error" events. If you look at the details, at least some of them will identify the offending module - rainmeter in my case. I ended up making xlabel meters instead and dropping rainmeter. No more crashes. =)

I actually trouble-shooted this back in April. Here were my findings:

"The problem seems to have to do something with how systray2 (ancient tray module) removes the task manager icon from the tray. You can verify this by quitting Litestep, opening the task manager, and restarting Litestep. You'll notice, in that situation, the icon isn't in the tray (that seems to be a bug across all Litestep tray modules - even xTray. so a core issue?). Closing the task manager in this case doesn't cause the error. Opening the task manager while Litestep is running... icon shows up... close the task manager... dead Litestep. That error doesn't happen in xTray (newest tray module).

Find a registry hack or something to make the task manager not create the tray icon in the first place seems to be the only fix, unless you really want to dig in and replace that old tray module. (Or you can just go in the traybox.box file, and comment out the line that starts *WharfModule, but you'll have no tray.)"
