Litestep seems to run very slow on my PC, it takes a good 5 seconds to launch most simple applications like notepad and firefox.

I think your computer runs slow and that is why notepad takes so long.

Check for spyware and viruses, remove unnecessary startup items, defrag, etc. LS does not slow down your computer.

And make sure you're running the final build, too, although it doesn't sound like that's the problem.

LS does not slow down your computer.

Unless, of course, you're on a 486 something like that. But I take it you're not, since you noticed things becoming slower than normal.

...unless you load up like 45 modules with alphatransparency over an animated background.

Did someone say DesktopX?

No. At least not until *you* had to go and do it.

Well I installed the Omar installer, and noticed a VERY drastic drop in speed doing anything on my PC. I uninstalled it and everything worked how it should.

That's unfortunate - and very unusual. I don't know why that would happen, but it's not normal.

Posted by member 339356 on 2006-08-14 14:38:52 link

Could it be to do with the distribution?

Posted by member 339356 on 2006-08-14 14:52:38 link

I installed it again and it runs alot faster.

I'm very confused...

Posted by member 339356 on 2006-08-14 15:22:04 link

Ah no it's still un bearably slow, that was just for about 30 seconds.

If you open the task manager and sort by CPU usage, what is using the most? How much is LS using?

Posted by member 339356 on 2006-08-14 16:01:06 link

SVChost.exe is using 99.

Posted by member 5575 on 2006-08-14 16:07:26 link

Aha! That's another problem entirely. Have you run windows update lately? Try running that first, and change back to explorer to do it if you're doing any major overhaul work, i.e., applying service packs. Then see whether the CPU usage returns to normal.

Posted by member 339356 on 2006-08-14 16:16:23 link

Okay, I'll see you after the jump.

Posted by member 339356 on 2006-08-14 16:23:57 link

Right. Turns out there was a few updates needed installing. (I'm not the sole user of this PC). Iv'e installed those.

Now there is something called SYSTEM IDLE PROCESS taking 99%

Posted by member 5575 on 2006-08-14 16:26:41 link

That is as it should be. That means you're only using 1% of the CPU to do anything, and the rest is sitting there... idle. =) As long as you keep things up to date, you shouldn't see any CPU problems like that.

Thanks, it seems to be speeding up now. :)

I'm starting to think that this WU issue would make a good sticky. We've had a few people asking about it lately.

Not that people who come here read stickies, but anyway... :P

Yep, or better yet - see if we can get one of the dev's to track it down and kill it. An undocumented explorer feature, no doubt.
