svchost.exe upto 99% cpu usage, litestep the cause. Thread last updated on 2006-08-19 07:53:23

One of the svchost.exe files has recently gone upto 99%, and does this often. I know it's a litestep problem, because as soon as I uninstall it the problem is gone.

But I don't want to uninstall litestep... and would like some resolve. Can anyone shed some light on the issue?

hmm, could you be more specific and tell us which theme or modules are loaded?

These are the modules loaded;

Haha, ignore the stuff on the left.

Go in to explorer and run windows updates. Then return to litestep.

the computer is completely up-to-date. Nothing can be done to update. Is there a new version of the litestep installer about?

That's a common svchost.exe error. Check anyway.

If that doesn't work, try disabling windows updates for a test.

You might try stopping and restarting the "Automatic Updates" service.

it could be anything, since svchost is a container for other services.
could be a device driver, for instance.
google for svchost and you'll see.

what i haven't seen mentioned in articles is that, maybe the services that run through a svchost process say so in their properties? i'm not sure about this. could help in the pinpointing.

ProcessExplorer will show you what runs under each process so you could see what caused it if it was an executable.

It also shows you which services are associated with a given svchost, although there is no breakdown on the CPU use of individual services. If you select "properties" (right click on the svchost entry) you can look at the DLLs and threads associated with each svchost process - that might help.

I was having the same problem, I did windows update and then shut down the computer (with explorer still as the shell.) Some updates need to install while windows is shutting down. If you have the little Windows Firewall shield next to your shut down button, then that is probably the problem. (p.s., the svchost that was taking up that much cpu was running something to do with winupdate. Thanks for the tip about ProcessExplorer, DeV)

I can comfirm it: the problem comes from windows update

I too am having the same issue with litestep one of the svchosts is using 100% cpu nearly all of the time. I finnally had to switch back to explorer.

I got it nailed down to a list of 25ish services that could be causing the problem but was not motivated to find out exactly which one it was.

Which one it was? Didn't you read the thread before posting?

Posted by member 1 on 2006-08-18 15:20:45 link

Why should he read the thread? It's not like it might contain the answer to the problem.

No, you're right. I wonder why we even have a forum, why not just a big chatbox where people can just blurt out questions randomly.

We already have that. It's called Blizzle.

I must give him credit...he did find the thread that dealt with his issue. :)

True. Seems to have gotten precious little out of it, but find it he did!

hah, so thats only 0.5 of a ls.net point?

can we please have a scoreboard? I'd atleast be in the positives, I think.

Hmmm, well, that's another thread in itself. =P
