Hey, I dunno if anyone remembers SteevoLS (me). I did a lotta themes about 2 years ago, but for some reason its been AGES since I've been here. I've been on DeviantArt a lot with 3D stuff, but I have done absolutely nooo theming.

Basically, I'm wondering what I've missed in the past year. Has Devilbo made any more LS installer bundles? Any awesome plugins? Any new builds? I kinda want to get into theming again, but I don't wanna be behind the times.

Hey SteevoLS, welcome back. If you haven't done any themeing in a couple of years I think you might have missed the xModules, which is the greatest thing that has happened to LS since... well, ever :)

First of all it's xLabel, which is a very powerful module based on Maduin's Label. You can do lots and lots of cool stuff with it; buttons, bars, moveable boxes (no one's using lsbox anymore :)), animations -- you name it. It also has really advanced solid color support, so nowadays you can make great-looking themes without using one single image. There's also xPopup and xTaskbar, which have similar capabilities. I suggest you head over to ls-universe.info and ask around in the forum.

There's also a module called LSLua that has become highly popular. It lets you use the Lua language to script stuff in LS. Can't really tell you much more about that since I'm not using it, but if you need more advanced scripting power than what mzscript can provide, you should check out LSLua.

As for builds, the latest offical one is 0.24.7 final, but there's also an experimental build with some new features around that is very stable, AFAIK there's a lot of people using it.

Finally, there's a new installer called LOSI being developed. Not sure when it'll be released, but it'll incorporate the new OTS3 standard.

So as you can see, a lot of stuff has happened and LS is more powerful than ever. If you want to check out what can be done with the "new" LS, try d/l-ing some themes by xcal, fractal.design or Cerbie. Ashtefere is also doing a lot of advanced visual stuff, and jqubit has released a couple of themes that take usability and interaction to new levels.

And oh, LS also has a wiki nowadays. It's probably a good place to start for getting up to speed.

West is being modest... check out his popsicle theme on the latest additions theme page. Also, Brian/Boreas has been doing cool command/alias stuff, and vbscript whoring. ;)

Pimping my own themes makes me feel dirty :)

And yeah, Boreas's done some really cool stuff in Penumbra, you should definitely check that out (sorry Brian, your releases are kind of far between so I forgot you ;))

I guess that's what happens when you've gotten old and been married. The "infrequent releases", I mean. =P

Thanks guys! And, after some thought, I realized it was Omar who made that sw33t installed. MyB.

I went digging, and I found that Dist.ru installer. Its OK, but what I'd really like to see is a module-megapack for all the dialuppers out there. I can download 60MB overnight easy enough, but it gets very tedious to individually DL things. Plus, I lost my 200+ collection of modules a year ago when my HD crashed.

All in all, it looks like the year or so that I missed (out of LS's eight years) was worth coming back to! I think I'll start out with something simple again, say, a minimalistic theme or something, but my PS skills are wayyyy better than before.

Ummmm... WHAT is gross? Pray tell, my good man?

I believe he refers to Boreas' comment. :)

I thought it had to do with steev comin back. :) To which I would agree. :)

Phew, that's good. I was hoping for a nice welcome or something :)

Anyway, this does raise the question... does anyone REMEMBER me? I wasn't ever in the forums, but I did do 16 themes...

Posted by member 212670 on 2006-08-05 16:53:13 link

I remember you. I think your last theme was lshalo?

Posted by member 12025 on 2006-08-05 18:39:54 link

No. You are lost to the sands of time. I do recall Glowstick 2, though...

Posted by member 248213 on 2006-08-05 21:56:12 link

yeah I was talking about Brian being impotent.

Sorry I dont remember you, but then again I dont remember much from last week either... I do remember lshalo, but 16 themes? thats quite alot.
Were they individual themes (not revisions)?

if so thats heaps and heaps.

I'm glad somepeople remember me, if only for HaloLS and GS2 :)

I posted 11 actual themes here, by my count. A few were pretty pathetic, though. The problem I have is that I had made an awesome Black Box type theme, very minimalistic, but very nice, but I lost it and 2 others when my HD died. DARN!

I'm working on a theme called "Return" right now, which I'm probably gonna make rather minimalistic by the time its done.

Only 2 from a HDD/FS problem? You're lucky ;).

I was gonna say, "that's what you get for not making backups", and then it hit me: when was it I last made a backup of my LS stuff?

/me backs stuff up

Posted by member 199294 on 2006-08-07 11:34:39 link

Lol, NOONE backs up as often as they should :( Yes, I was lucky though.

Posted by member 248213 on 2006-08-07 16:32:35 link

/me backs stuff up too

When I rebooted today, it didnt work the first time... got a BSOD :/ I hope it doesnt crap out.

Posted by member 199294 on 2006-08-07 19:19:39 link

BSOD? That sucks... use Linux! :)

Posted by member 248213 on 2006-08-07 20:36:03 link

What? Give up LS for Linux? are you mental?

Posted by member 219700 on 2006-08-07 22:47:06 link

I don't back anything up, haven't had a single computer crash yet.

Posted by member 5575 on 2006-08-07 23:53:02 link

Heh. Famous last words. Can I interest you in a copy of the deskfolders module source code?

Posted by member 212670 on 2006-08-08 00:11:41 link

I do backups all the time because I hate the thought of having to redo work I've already done.

Posted by member 5575 on 2006-08-08 00:50:07 link

I'll say. I even hate having to redo work that I *haven't* done.

Posted by member 199294 on 2006-08-08 13:31:53 link

@Fractal: Remember, LS is just a standin for Linux, or at least it used to be :)

But no, I'm not giving up LS yet!
