McAfee Antivirus doesn't like Litestep Thread last updated on 2006-05-14 23:22:25

McAfee Antivirus/firewall version 6.0 doesn't work at all with Litestep. The Updater program will open, but can't connect to the net. The system tray icon for Antivirus appears, but the console window will not open. It works fine when Explorer is the shell. Norton works fine, and isn't blocking the internet connection for the Updater. How can I get McAfee to work? Thanks in advance?

EDIT: I can launch the main console from the file manager, but not from the system tray. I dunno why, but it'll do for now while my insatiable curiosity drives me on.

Send them an email stating that you are using a shell other than Windows Explorer for your interface and would like their application to support it. Tell them that if they decide not to support it you will be forced to upgrade your virus protection to a better application like Avast or AVG.

Thanks DeViLbOi, I may just have to do that. I really like McAfee, too. :(

Btw, in the interests of furthering this newbie's knowledge, why wouldn't a particular application work under Litestep?

Wow, someone that actually likes Mcafee? You know, that antivirus doesn't work well with ANYTHING, I'm not surprised it barfs with a different shell.

You know there are better anti-virus programs that are free and won't interfere? Of course, I don't even use any of them, since I can't get a virus.

shanterusan :: Some applications when built depend upon parts of the explorer shell to be there. When those things are not provided for them they don't work properly. For a long time if you used an ATI video card LS didn't work at all. Those were some hard times... :(

Malakim, McAfee works perfectly for me under Explorer and seeing as it was a gift and an old version (therefore no subscription cost), it's free for me. :)

DeViLbOi, I'm gonna identify what McAfee needs as my next holiday project. :D

shanterusan, everything works perfectly until you realize they don't. Explorer works perfectly, IE works perfectly, Windows works perfectly, my whole computer works perfectly... until you realize there is something better. And then you find out... it wasn't perfect afterall.

Oh come on Malakim, I'm sure you've had programs crash, especially IE(though I use IE)/explorer(file browser)/exlprer(shell).

And DeViLbOi, I didn't know ATI depends on Explorer (I have an ATI... I think Radeon 9700 Pro). What problems were you experiencing? I might be seeing some right now...

I suggest SpyBot as an Anti-Virus since it's completely free with out any limitations. (otherwise, I would try out AdAware but the active protection is disabled unless you pay)

Spybot is not an antivirus program. It will find spyware and adware, but won't protect you from worms or trojans.

Ryuho :: That was a loong loong time ago. You couldn't pay me to buy an ATI card now though.

Ryuho, I don't use IE, or explorer. If my browser crashes, it is due to a poorly coded website, not because of an unstable browser. I try to stick to stable software personally.

And before anyone makes a windows joke, I can't recall XP crashing more than a handful of times since it came out for me. I have seen worse happen to other OS's in that time.
