Problem with Litestep launch Thread last updated on 2006-04-20 23:05:07

I just installed Litestep via LOSI on Windows 98. NOw when I boot up Windows, I get a module error from Litestep and it fails to load, leaving me with a completely empty desktop. No taskbar, no icons, nothing. All I seem to be able to do is pull up the task manager and shutdown the computer. How do I recover from this? I have a Windows 98 boot disk, but I haven't been able to accomplish anything with it.

Also, when I get this problem resolved, I would like to install the latest build, but I'm not sure exactly what I need in the way of modules for it to run (which is why I used LOSI to start with). Any help on that would be greatly appreciated as well.

Thanks!

Boot to a dos prompt.

edit c:\windows\system.ini

Change:
shell=c:\litestep\litestep.exe
to
shell=explorer.exe

Close, save, reboot.

Use Omar's installer, found on this site in the downloads section. Update to the final build. Note: Because of your OS, theme options will be limited.

Okay, I'll do that.

Exactly what limitations will there be in my theme options?

I'd put XP on the comp, but it's only a P2 500 with 200MB RAM, so I wasn't sure about it being able to handle it.

XP ran fine for me on a PII 300 with 256 M; just don't turn on all the graphics bells and whistles.

As far as themes are concerned, there isn't any native transparency support for win98.

Get one of them tweaked out XP installs off bittorrent. There are lots that are stripped to bare, and I've had them run find on PII's and PIII's.

XP isn't so bad when someone takes a pickaxe to it.
