Locking up with Windows 2000 Thread last updated on 2006-01-25 14:56:47

I installed Litestep yesterday on a new Windows 2000 laptop. I used LiteStep_Installer_omar_3.0.2_1-79.zip. I then installed the MacOSX14.lsz theme that I found at WinCustomize. I changed a few settings for the VWM, and changed the cmd to be cygwin.bat, but besides that everything is pretty much out of the box.

Litestep is constantly locking up on me. My applications continue to work fine, but I can't switch desktops, or use the Litestep menus/task switcher/dock. If I press Ctrl-Alt-Del, and choose task manager, then everything is fine. However, less than 30 seconds later it will lock up again.

Has anyone else seen a problem like this? Is there a solution for it?

Also, if it matters....the CPU get's pegged at 100% when it is locked up.

Be sure to update to the Litestep 0.24.7 Final build, as well as update the NetLoadModule to 2.5.0.

Try another theme (revert back to the default) and ensure it isn't a problem specific to the theme you are using. If it is, report the issue to the theme author. Or if you can isolate the exact component causing the problem, report the issue to the relevant person.

Well I installed .24.7, and NLM 2.5.0, and still had the problem, in both the default theme (austerity) and MacOSX. I then fooled around with the settings that I had for ckVWM as that was really the only thing that I had changed.

I added these lines to my personal.rc:

VWMShowIcons true
VWMTitleBars true
VWMBackColor 000088
VWMForeColor 0000aa
VWMSelBackColor 000055

So, I started by commenting all of them out. That seemed to fix the problem. I then added the lines back one at a time, starting with the colors, then the iconshow, and finally the title show.

I still didn't have any problems. Good news in that it was working, but bad news, in that I really don't know what the problem was.

So bottom line is that it is working fine now, but I don't know what the problem was.

Thanks for the help though, you gave me someplace to start looking.

Ok, I take the previous post back. It is still locking up. I have re-commented the lines out to no avail. There must be something else going on here. I will continue to try and figure out what the problem is, but if anyone has ideas on what to try, that would be appreciated.

Any weird software running (MM key stuff, wireless LAN management, etc.)?

It seems to work fine, when I don't load ckVWM (however, this is the main reason I am using litestep, I really like having a 9 virtaul desktops in a 3x3 config).

One wierd thing that I noticed is this app running:

LINK

It has not title, doesn't show up in the applications tab of task manater, and I can't resize, left or right click on it at all. Any idea what it could be? Is it even litestep related?

I think I fixed it again...I hope. It has been running fine for about an hour now.

I changed the version of ckVWM from 1.42 to 1.40, and it hasn't locked up. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

One wierd thing that I noticed is this app running:

heh. that looks like the VWM window for a 1x2 config.

You could try RabidVWM, instead... :)

Well it locked up again. I briefly looked at rabidVWM and thought that it couldn't do a 3x3 layout, but now I see that it can. I'll try that...

So far so good with rabidVWM...this is the real test though, everytime I post that it is working, it locks up. Let's hope I didn't just jinx myself.
