I have use LS for well over a year now and think that i have figured out what exectly I want/need in a theme.

So is there any guide on how to get started with themeing?

best bet is to look at other themes. most of the customization of themes is done through customization of modules, so module docs are always good. apart from that, it's try, break, fix, try, break, fix, etc.
